Hi all,

I'm the new owner of a 270. Looking for some of your pet load information. The rifle is a Ruger 77 stainless with a 22" tube. It will be used as my deer, antelope, and god willing, SHEEP rifle. I want to find one good shooting load and use it for everything from bunnies to deer (elk as a backup rifle).

Looking at ballistics, the 130 gr or 140 gr bullets look to be the ticket. Maybe the poly tipped hornady sst or the nosler b-tip. Any and all info is good.

Thanks,

Tyson

I've been trying to develop a good load for my .270. So far the best in my rifle is a 130 gr Speer Grand Slam over a max load of IMR-4350. The "usual" or classic load for the .270 is a good 130 gr bullet over about 60 gr of H-4831. (Start at about 55 gr and work up as 60 is a max load.)

Some say the 130 gr is too light for elk and to stick with the 150. I know lots of people in Wyoming who swear by the 130, though.

I do fairly well with a near-max load of H4831 like Cali said. IMR4831 plays well, too, at a slightly different load.

Cali, if I ever draw one of these fancy elk tags here in KY I'm going to load up 140-grain FailSafes, I do believe.

I've only tried one powder and one bullet, and those are H4831, and the 150 grain Nosler BT. I worked up to 58 grains and stopped there as this was the maximum charge listed in my book, and besides the case is almost completely full with this amount of powder. I got great accuracy with this load out of my Browning A bolt so I have never tried anything else. Personally I don't see how the 130's have much advantage over the 150's. If you sight in 3 inches high at 100 yards (like I do,) the difference in drop between the two out to 400 yards is very little.

I've been loading & shooting a .270 (Rem bdl) for 27 years. After several years of playing with 130 gr bullets, I tried some 150 s and found my gun likes em better.
I also tried four or five different powders and setteled on IMR 4350.
The load I use is over any books max, but I'm getting 2940 fps with a 150 gr Nosler ballistic tip, whitch make the gun very close to a 7mm Rem mag, and it will always put five shots in a 5/8" group at 100 yds.
It's very deadly on deer, and other small critters, but I wouldn't use em on elk. Try the 150 gr partition. IMR 4350 is a versital powder, and produces good loads in my 7mm-08 and my .338 also.

Some 270's do best with 130 grainers and some with 150's. Mine like the 150's with R-22 and Speer flat base or Nosler Partitions. H4831 is an old standby that's hard to beat.

Sako finnbear [pre 82} 53 grns H4831 behind a horny 150 flatbase very accurate load, never tried anyother type of bullet tho the old horny always worked well.

Thanks for the info guys. Once chuckar season is over, I will dive right in to finding a good load.

Don't be scared to use your 270 on elk i have taken several with mine haven't had one run off yet 150gr horanday i can't get you the loading data still packed away but know it was near max my rifle is a ted willams that will shoot 1/2" groups at 200 yrds

I've been meaning to try RL-22 in my .270, and I've also heard it works well in the .338, but I haven't been able to find any in the local gun shops. It's either pretty popular or not called for much in this area. They have the other Reloader powders, but not RL-22. (?) I hope to find some at the gun show this weekend.

My favorite load for my ruger MKII Stainless 270 Win is as follows,
Bullet - Nosler 130 grain Ballistic Tip
Case - Winchester
Primer - Federal 210 Match
Powder - Reloder 22
Load - 58.0 gr.
I regularly get under 1" groups @ 100 yards.

This afternoon I went out and shot the new Ruger. I had a 3.5 pound trigger put on it. I'm impressed. Its a shooter.

The first 3 rounds were just under 1" at 100 yards. This surprises me because I had loaded some 130 grain Remington Corelock because they were super cheap. I was figuring on breaking in the barrel with them, then switching to a better bullet.

Overall I shot 30 rounds loaded with 53.2 grns of imr4350, CCI primers, winchester brass, and the 130 grn core locks. My Sierra manual shows this at 3000 fps. They regularly grouped at 1" or under.

I cleaned every 5 rounds to help the barrel break in. The POI really starts shifting when the barrel heats though. I'll continue to experiment, I'm sure I can do even better with some different load combos.

As mentioned earler, my .270 likes 150 gr bullets, I also found out it likes HOT loads.
Try going up & down with the powder charge ( don't exceed the Sierra book max )

Just got back from shooting the .270. I shot 45 rounds, cleaning every five shots.

I tried a variety of loads consisting of 2 different powders. IMR4350, RL22. I loaded them at max loads and 100 fps off of max.

I tried the Remington core loct 130 grn, Sierra spitzer boat tail 130 grain, and 140 grain. Hornady spitzer boat tail, in 130 and 140. And a Speer flat base 150 grain spitzer.

EVERY group was between .75 and 1 inch at 100 yards. It doesn't matter what I feed it, it shoots the same.

MOA is plenty good enough for my purposes. I'll probably settle on a 140 grain bullet and use it for everything from squirrels to deer. It should tip them over just fine.

Thanks again for your help.

I inherited a early 1950s Win Model 70. Heres some coyote/prairie dog loads
90 gr Speer HP 54.5 gr IMR 4064
110 gr V-Max 58 gr IMR 4350
After severe cleaning, I found this gun to be in fantastic condition. Its still able to touch holes at 100 yds.

When I had a .270 several years ago, here's the load that shot best in it,and it was a Browning A-bolt stainless stalker:

150 grain Nosler ballistic tip

50.6 grains IMR 4350

Bench rest primer or Federal Magnum,or CCI Magnum,in that order

Nowadays I'd substitute the ballistic tip with a Nosler protected point partition.
