270 recommendations

I am bringing my father in law antelope hunting and he wants to buy a new gun for the occassion. He says he wants a 270 and was looking at the Savage 11/111 with a nikon 3- 9x40 at bass pro for $550. Does anyone have this, or have recommendations for others in that price range?

I bought a Remington 770 used for about $250. It comes scoped with a Bushnell 3-9x40. I've shot an antelope with it at 342 yards. I think it is a fantastic little gun for the money. It's not pretty, the action is a bit sloppy and the light transmission of the scope makes it only so-so. But I can give it to a kid or firs time hunter and know they will be alright with it, which is why I keep it. Its probably as close to disposable of a serviceable biggame rifle you could get. Is this a one and done kinda hunt?

In that price point I just recently saw a CDNN flyer that had Browning Abolts with a Nikon scope right in there and a couple a little cheaper. I think the sale ends the 31st. They also have Ruger American Rifles in 270 for $389.00 with no scope. Most Savages I have known were decent shooters but have never owned one.

Whittakers has Savage 116 xp's with Nikon scope for $560.00 that is a stainless with synthetic stock, they also have Ruger Americans for $341.00 no scope and they have Howa Lightnings no scope for $299.00

So there are some choices out there in that price range all of which will get the job done.

I wouldn't say one and done, but it wont be used every year. we can't use rifles for deer in our state so itll only be used on out of state hunts which he may go on every few years.

I have never seen a Savage that won't shoot-even if it is a .270!

Unless you count primitive arms, which is the last two weeks of december. The other seasons are shotgun and archery.

I think a Savage 110 is a good rifle...I own 3 of varying age. They are probably a heavier rifle but if you're chasing antelope and maybe some deer you won't notice the difference of 1 pound. Personally I don't like factory packaged rifle deals as the optics tend to be low quality but the Nikon scope should work just fine for light use.

I own a savage axis in 30-06. It doesnt have the accutrigger though, so i dont know how relatable it would be to this 11/111. It was one of those package deals you mentioned and it came with a terrible bushnell that broke before i got 10 rounds through the gun.

There's always the used market. I'm not a big savage fan but others love them. I've never heard anyone say something bad about a ruger american. Id go with a used gun with a leupold vx1. It may not be nee but it will retain its value verses a bargain priced nee rifle.

If you can buy a Browning A-Bolt with a scope on it for $550, buy it and don't look back. That is a smoking deal on a tack driving rifle. You can buy Hornady Custom ammo or HSM ammo and I would be shocked if it didn't shoot sub-NOA. I've had three in .270 that did just that.

Yep that Savage will absolutely work just fine, although I would shop around. I bought a 111 THXP .270 package for $465 a while ago as an extra deer rifle for when I have both of my brothers with me hunting. The Nikon is the best I have ever looked through on a package rifle. I'm sure there are better scopes on some rifle combo I haven't looked through, but it is still pulling fulltime duty on my sons .243.

I too have a Browning A Bolt in .270 Win. I bought it back in the late 1980's. Shoots great with a variety of ammo, but prefers 150 gr. Federal Fusions. I have taken Whitetails, mule deer, elk, caribou, and moose with it. For a number of years it was my patrol rifle.

I bought that package in .243 this year. Very happy with it. Used it to take 2 antelope and an elk this year. The scope is a BDC scope so get familiar with that first. Nikon has a spot-on ballistic page or I guess you call that an app nowadays. Very useful for learning the scope. Also got a $75 rebate from Savage.
