So I have a new tikka 243 with 22.5" barrel I'm looking to make an economical varmit load for. Not looking for absolutely every last fpm but not going to leave 300 fps on the table. I usually look at load data, pick the fastest then start looking at other variables that matter to me.

I'm going to be shooting 87 gr Vmax's for the higher bc varmit round i can also target shoot some with. I'm not seeing much load data at this bullet weight for the 243. If the enduron line wasn't discontinued I would've just used one of those powders.

Anyhow. I'm looking for a standard on the shelf powder by a main brand that's not extremely hard to find and won't be discontinued next month, is in the normal going rate price range for a pound (less than 50), and is temperature insensitive. I liked h4831 but hodgons got it (and everything from Australia i believe) way overpriced. Need to stay economical. I did find Accurate 4350 for a normal price and a load data for in and 87 gr but I don't think that's a common powder brand to find around here and isn't temperature stable.

Any recommendations?

I'd look at varget. Temp stable, and can be used for .223 through 30.06.
Imr 4064, h4350, h4831, superformance. My hornady 11th edition lists a bunch of powders for 87 gr projectiles

Thanks for the recommendations guys. I may go with winchester StaBall 6.5. Seems like it's almost the new "enduron" powder as it's not tooooo expensive (54 dollars) temp insensitive, copper fouling eliminator, and highest velocity on the data. Closest I could find on hodgons data online was a 90 gr sp.

I wish I could use superformance but it seems like it stops at about 80 gr bullets in the 243.

I need to pick up a more recent manual that has more data and these newer powders in it.

I'll dig through my load data to when I get home. I loved those 87gr VMAX and shot hundreds of them. I have had a 243 in a long time, but want to say I shot imr4350 and RL22. This makes me want to get another.

I've used staball 6.5 and it's a good powder, but like most other supplies in my area, it's not always available, so when you decide on a powder, projectile, case, primer combo, I recommend that you stock up. I always check the powder and primer situation when I'm in my local runnings , as it's been the place to buy such items.

My buddy has a good load with the 87 grain Vmax with IMR4831. I'm currently using RL17 in my load with 100 grain bullets but down to my last 25 rounds and out of powder so will have to find a new load without alliant powder. I've had good loads with RL16 and H4831sc before. Tried H4350 but it was never that good for me.
