2024 College Football šŸˆ Season starts tomorrowā€¦. Yee Yee

So, if you had an 18 yo son who was a top 15 football recruit who came to you and said, "I don't care about weather, or legacy, or academic programs, or NIL, or hope, or 'restoring' anything, or NFL draft. I just care about playing in at least one CFP title game during my 5 year window at college." How would you rank the the schools for him. I think it is pretty easy.

Tier 1 - Georgia and Ohio State -- flip a coin. (the Sabin-led Tide would be here in the past, but he isn't asking about the past)
Tier 2 - Michigan, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Clemson, Oregon, Texas
Tier 3 - ND, Florida, Florida State, Penn State
Tier 4 - Boise State and all other Power Four schools with a better than .700 record over the last five years not otherwise named above (google it)
Tier 5 - Good luck to you son

I donā€™t think there is a tier 1. Hard to believe, but Iā€™d include Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss in the top Category. Subject to change for the next few years. Iā€™d substitute SC for Auburn at the moment and include Florida.

Why arenā€™t there more Big10 schools? :)

Tier 3 max for those 4 programs.

As for B10 - I call them as I see it. I have no allegiance to any conference.

Or he could just go to NDSU and win three or four. As a MSU fan and grad, that was painful to say, but it is true.

Some of those young men graduated having won more titles than suffered losses over their entire career. Pretty crazy.

No doubt the top 35 or so FBS teams are better, but the FCS is the best level of college football that still feels like college football. FBS, with NIL & portal, now are just a minor leagues for the NFL. Who knows, maybe it trickles down and breaks FCS too and then we will have to turn to DII.

I do think itā€™s pretty ignorant to say the SEC has been cheating and now itā€™s even. If there was anything like that happening every school that invests in their football program was involved (MI, OH, PSU, Clemson, etcā€¦)

I mean, the SEC all this time HAS had the mantra, "It just means more...." ;)

QQ

Thatā€™s it. It wonā€™t say ā€œend of the SECā€
Iā€™ve never thought the SEC was going to cease being relevant or producing powerhouse teams. This just wasnā€™t the year for the conference. No amount of explaining it away changes an L to a W.

Petty though it may be, Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a lot of folks who have enjoyed seeing the SEC get a little comeuppance after so many years of cockiness. Personally, Iā€™m happy to see the Big 10 develop into more than just Ohio State and (every so often) Fishigan.

If thereā€™s one thing Iā€™ve learned in the last 30 some years watching college football šŸˆ nobody stays on top forever whether thatā€™s a team or conferenceā€¦.

Itā€™s damn hard to win consistently, Nebraska was a bully in the early 90ā€™s theyā€™ve been unsuccessful to get back on top since Osborne left

USC was a west coast power for decades , since the mid 2000ā€™s theyā€™ve struggled. 2008 was the last time the Trojans won a conference championship.

Regardless of whoā€™s on top conference or team wise , there always someone else looking to take your spot in the pecking order.

as a Duck theyā€™ve been able to stay somewhat consistent the last 15 years with the one hickup in 2016 , losing seasonā€¦.

If itā€™s time for the SEC to be behind some teams ā€¦. Boo freaking hooo !!!

FBS maybe more than just minor league these days...
