Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

2021 Spring Bear Thread

Have property in a Calif ( I know, poor me) county where black bear cannot be hunted. They are thriving there. Ran into 2 on different occasions. One walking up road towards me. I spotted him about 125 yards away and just stood by my truck. Got my phone out and recorded him walking towards me. He got within 50' when I decided he didn't know I was there and said "Hi Bear". He stopped and looked up at me. Big bear, too. He just turned around and jogged a few yards but then stopped, turned to look at me and turned back walking away. Did this a few times before going off the road. Watched him go around my camp. The other time I was gliding down a high ridge into my camp. I glide down my ATV with engine off. It's quieter that way and fun as I can get some good speed that way. I glided on momentum right into my camp and saw this damn black cow by my trailer. Damn I hate those cows as they leave pies and rub the trailer with their dirty hides. I rolled up fast and hard to scare him away but there was just a little different reality. It wasn't a cow, but a big black boar. Maybe 350 lbs. He ran so fast into a creek bed I did not see where he went. I got off ATV with hand gun in hand just in case, but he was no where to be seen. I didn't hear a rustle, nothing. He disappeared fast! I never considered black bear really dangerous as my experiences have been they are pretty shy. It was fun to bump into a couple. I have dozens and dozens of game cam pics of them but seeing them in person while not hunting them was a surprise. Anyhow, that's my experience with blackie's. Once, while sleeping with ramp down on toy hauler trailer there, one came so close to me at night I could smell his foul odor but could not see him! By the time I got a flash light he was gone, but man that smell. Must have been dang close as the odor was overwhelming. That one I don't count because I couldn't actually see him or her. Could have even been a big foot I suppose. ;) I do not hunt the property,160 acres, as I am surrounded by forest land and I use mine as a kind of refuge. Have pics of pregnant bears that stayed there a month or 2 many times over the last several years. Many lions, coyote etc. Deer are residents along with turkey. Even a Wolf has entered our county the past couple weeks!! San Luis Obispo County. Monitored via GPS. I would love to see him. He's looking for a mate they say. Maybe a Coywolf in the making. (unlike Big Foot, those are real) That would be awesome.

Wouldn't call it a bear day but thought I was gonna get out tonight. Instead I'm drinkin beer and splitting wood.

Did have one go through the pasture this am.

Anyone who says cabins aren't work doesn't own one....

Dude you git all kinds of stuff, kubota, cabin, dingo, dump trailer, your my hero.

That's what I'm thinking, my bait is around PA and I keep telling myself "any day now" but the forecast is pretty trash for the next 10 days... Normally when the first bear hits, the other dozen or so show up...
My farmland bait has been super slow with the cold weather. He just woke up to start with then the cold has him holed up. Couple times he hit he hardly ate

My 15 yr old got his first bear this week. Shot it right at dark on the third day of his hunt and even though it only went about 50 yards it took us awhile to find it in the thick stuff. Nighttime pictures look like crap but he's happy to get his first bear. He's the chef of the family so he has all sorts of new recipe plans for the meat.

Still have two more tags we'll try to fill later in May. Good luck to everyone chasing bruins this Spring.
