2020 has been a crazy year. But in the middle of it all, after 20+ years of applying, I was blessed to draw a cow moose tag Here in MT. I spent a ton of time getting ready over the summer.
I was super excited to get to share another hunt with my dad. He’s 71 now and I don’t take this time with him for granted. We worked hard scouting preseason and spent the first day-and-a-half of season watching for a nice, big, mature cow that we had found. A good friend took a break from bow hunting to join us and even though we didn’t see her those days we had a great time together.
Wednesday afternoon we decided to change up and went to another area that a friend had given me info on. We climbed a hill at the edge of beautiful, “moose-y” area on the west end of a reservoir. Within 30 seconds My friend spotted a mature cow and she was close, I ranged her at 215 yds. I had a perfect ledge to lay prone and and shoot. We thought she was in a dry area but when she “splashed down” after my second shot we knew we were in for some extra work. It took us 3 hrs to get her out.
I loved getting out with my dad, it’s a memory I will treasure. I also really enjoyed the camaraderie (and pack out help!) with my friend, Jake. And we’re definitely enjoying the meat, I want to start rationing it so it lasts .
