Hello all!! I am a new member to this site but, have been browsing it from time to time the last few years. I just found out that I have drawn a 2009 Fall brown bear tag for the eastern portion of Afognak!!!! I could use some advice and any info on areas that are more productive than others. I have a couple of family members that are living in a logging camp on the island. They have some limited access to a truck and they own a boat. I plan on buying the native land access permits if needed. I live in southern Utah and I am just trying to gather as much info as possible to plan my trip and make the few dollars I have streeeeeeeetch. I am more than willing to give any of you the same when it comes to information I know about Utah. Thanks "Petey".

Petey, welcome to the board. I'm not that familiar with the eastside, most of my hunting on Afognak has been in the southwest. There is a hatchery in Kitio Bay that has a large run of salmon and plenty of bears. I've been there and know the logging roads come pretty close to it. I'm sure your family will have a better idea of places to hunt on that side. Here's a map of the native land, trespass fee for bear is $1,200. Basically anywhere that is not AJV is off limits without paying the fee. http://dnr.alaska.gov/mlw/planning/easmtatlas/kodiak/indexmap.htm

If the east side is still open for registration elk you should go in and put your name in. The bear license is transferable to a lesser species. If not pick up a deer tag or two and let us know how you do. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply and map link, TB. I believe that I will pick up at least one blacktail tag cause god knows if I don't, I will see a smokin buck. My little sis put in for a registration elk permit so if we see one of those she will be able to put it down. Hopefully I will have a freezer already full of elk meat before I leave to Alaska. Are the salmon still running the latter part of Oct?
Do you know of any stores near the Kodiak airport that I can get a couple of bags of salt for hides if I am successful?
also, I have heard that flights are cheaper the first part of Oct. if I wait until the permanent fund checks are sent out to residents? Is this true? Thanks for your help!

Silvers run until early October so there will be some in the streams. The airport is about 5 miles from town, AC is downtown and Safeway is about 2 miles down Mill Bay Rd. The air transporter may have a courtesy van that can run you there. AK Air has a PFD sale in early October, the tickets can be changed once without a fee and are good for a year. They are usually the cheapest fares of the year.
