Well, this (obviously) is my post 2000 on HuntTalk. I will start by saying how much I have garnered through the forum and interacting with great people (as well as Cush ;) ). It is a refuge for me to find like minded people and lose myself a bit into all things hunting. I am no sort of expert and don't have a long hunting resume (didn't hunt my first animal until I was 33 and didn't harvest until I was 40) but have definitely learn a lot.

My subject here is how many Colorado folks have taken advantage of the RFW program and what are your takeaways?
What do you think of how the program is administered?
How much do you consider these opportunities when putting together your applications?

I will tell you that I have hunted RFW twice (doe pronghorn and cow) connecting on the doe and most probably would have connected on the cow had I not had to leave early due to unforeseen stuff. I also took the Hunting Princess on an RFW cow hunt this last year as it was the only way to fit hunting around her school schedule. We would have had a very good shot at a cow had we not been hamstringed by the vehicle we had to use. In all of these instances I have found the ranch reps to be kind and helpful. FYI, I applied for a couple this year that are longshots and will continue to utilize them to extend my seasons......

I took my son on a RFW Elk hunt two years ago and had a blast and connected on a nice 5x5 and saw hundreds of elk. Also, I've been on three RFW turkey hunts, two successful. Nothing but great things to say about each of the ranches and the people running their programs...never had a problem with any of them.

I wouldn't consider a RFW Elk tag for myself but for my kids and their spouses, definitely. I think one major factor to a successful hunt is to treat the ranch contacts with a lot of respect, and in most cases, they'll point you in the right direction. I really enjoy having access to a large private ranch without other competition and seeing lots of game.....a much different gig than the general rifle seasons.
