1924-2024

Q. Lewis Regenstein is the most outspoken advocate of stopping all hunting in the United States. A member of your staff has advised that he is serving as your environmental adviser. How close will he be to your administration?

Governor Carter. Well, I am not in favor of stopping hunting in any degree. I have literally hundreds of advisers, and I don't even know Mr. Regenstein personally. I may have met him, but I don't remember him. But the fact that I have someone advising me who might have a strange or unique attitude isn't significant at all. I like to get different viewpoints expressed to me from all people, and then I make up my own mind. I think this is a good thing for a potential President to do rather than just get advice from those with whom he agrees.

Regardless of whether you agree with his political views or not, you have to admire a man that is willing to listen to "different viewpoints" before making a decision on an issue. Sadly, in today's political environment, most policy makers are afraid of hearing differing points of view. Surround yourself with "yes men" and destroy your opposition at all cost.

Mr. Carter's list of community service is impressive. RIP.

“My motivation I think was trying to preserve as much as I could of the beauty of God’s world. Based on my early religious feelings and the heritage that I got from my father and others who would try and do the same thing from a sportsman’s point of view… still, you know, being on a trout stream which is always lovely, the water’s always pure, the environment’s always conducive to preservation or protection, that’s still some of the most awe inspiring experience I’ve ever had.”

- Jimmy Carter, speaking for the film Wild President.

The days of price controls and gas lines.
I was on a flight out of atlanta. Commotion up near the front as we were about to depart.
Running late already.
Suddenly there he is coming down the isle shaking hands with everyone on the flight, seemingly
with all the time in the world.
No I did not shake his hand. I told the secret service I was going to miss my connecting flight,
which I did.

For those who haven't read Hunter Thompson's account of Jimmy Carter's Law Day speech, it's well worth a read. I won't link it here, because, well, it's HST, and not for all tastes, but it's easy to find.

RIP.
