So I was finally one of the chosen few for a 16D archery elk tag. I'll have time for a couple scouting trips ahead of the season, plus showing up 4-5 days early to get dialed in.

Any previous 16D hunters that are willing to share a few pointers for this unit?

Thanks in advance. Could be I have hunted a great tag you have or want since I put in the draws throughout the west...like a lot of you do. I'd sure be willing to reciprocate.

Thanks,

Kirby,
I have no experience with the unit, but I've got some good advice for you. Shoot the first 360 bull you see. That's tried and true advice right there. Just ask around and you'll see. ;)

Good luck.

Oak, that is the best advice I have ever heard on a hunting site. ;)

Oak, I'll tuck that away and tape it to my bow riser the morning of Sept. 11. In the meantime I am doing my map scouting and prepping for the first trip down there in July. Looking for any folks with experience in the unit who are willing to visit about it to help me get oriented before I hit the ground down there. I've had similar tags in the past so this is not new territory in terms of sitting on a great tag. Anybody, or anybody who knows anybody, who has pulled a 16D tag?

Thanks,

Kirby

That's what I told Buzz when he asked me for advice on his hunt two years ago. Had a voice mail from him when I got down off the mountain from my sheep hunt just saying that he had taken my advice.

NM 16d, archery.... paradise

I've been lucky enough to draw 16d archery tag twice in the last 6 years. AMAZING PLACE!
Hunted primarily from Reserve side, though the back side is good too. Hunted with two other friends both times, they each took animals over water at remote tanks. Drop me a note for more details. Oh yeah, Last time there I shot a 300 + 5x6 @ 8 yards, Guide and I spent 7 hours looking for it the next morning, no luck. Broken hearted, still dream about him. Into Elk every time into the woods.

K Hunter:

If you want to see what the country looks like, tune in to Outdoor Channel this afternoon (3:00 pm Mountain time). The episode in NM archery elk, and we were just across the road from your unit. It all looks the same.

Still like Oak's advice. Hope you follow it and shoot 360+ bull.

Thanks Fin, I have hunted unit 15 before. Is that the one you guys filmed?

I think Oak's advice is clever and took it as such, but not particularly helpful, or least to anyone other than maybe Chuck Adams who said in all seriousness "A 370 bull is NOT a 400 bull, and I like to hunt big bulls, you won't shoot a big bull by shooting the smaller ones". He said this to a mostly OTC Colorado crowd who could scarcely identify with it. Kind of on a different plane than the guys living in the real world.

Do not know any guys who would not shoot the first 360+ they got in range of (and know some who would shoot when out of range). The other choice is to what, pass hoping for a BIG BULL? I will pass on the 300-320 bulls same as I did in 15 and in AZ previously. If Oak is suggesting passing on 340 bulls till I get to a 360 bull in that unit, well I know better than that, I think.

I do not especially 'need' help with this great tag, but it is always helpful to talk to guys who have been on the ground for a new area just to help build an effective game plan to get the scouting started off effectively. I will be there for a week in a couple weeks.

Hoping for something a good bit better than these Colorado bulls I snapped pics of while scouting a couple weeks ago.
