Came across this tent that I feel may be a great spike setup... 18 lbs... throw in a collapsible light weight camp stove and telescopic stove pipe... between 2 people - even packing in without horses and this seems rather do-able...

Good thing - this is out of Missoula, MT as well...

A pecker pole for the center and guy-lines. Would be as cozy a spike camp as I would imagine...

Anyone have this? The price is pretty nice as well - $349

24lbs!!!!! you're a 'ell of a man if you pack that any distance along with the rest of the stuff you need to take, even between 2 guys, of course length of stay determines how much you're packing and if you're packin' it in in multiple trips, then it won't be an issue, but one haul for a week long hunt and that's gonna be a toad of a load-----I bought a tepee from titanium goat and it weighs 8lbs--sleeps 4 with gear inside--no floor, but that's what tarps or plastic are for, but it was a lot more $$$$.....chris

CSutton - 18lbs w/o the center pole. The mention of the pecker pole used in lieu of the center pole would reduce the weight by 6lbs.
Include the light weight collapsible camp stove(20lbs), and stove pipe(4lbs) - 42lbs total split by two people.. 21lbs each.
Agree - would be a load... though - do-able.
Warmth for some can make or break a week long hunt when in a 3 lb tent and returning from a hunt wet...
Do-able in the idea 21lbs each absorbed is heavy though not out of the ability scope of a foot pack hunt.
Packing meat - I'll pack out 75-100lbs. If one is capable of such, he is well within the comfort zone of packing the above.

For myself, comfort for a week is well worth the slight discomfort of the extra weight. Packing any weight is already a discomfort to myself... One beauty of horses and wall tents is the capability to dry clothes, be it from washing or a snow soaked trek back to camp... this offers that ability - and this alone is worth the 22lbs hiked in and out.

Take into account those using a game cart - and the weight factor of 21lbs becomes nil.

Anyhow, IMO, do-able... every person has a threshold for comfort. Mine is comfort over a week vs comfort over the hike in and out.

Do you bring canvas cloth with fire retardant to cover the side of the tent with the stove pipe? Also, the material close to the camp stove, no worries with the heat that close to that type of material?

1/3rd the weight. of the above mentioned tent.

no we don't cover anything and we've had no issues concerning the tent materia, as of yet--I'll have to check it for pinholes next time I set it up, but for four yrs it's been great ---the one thing we did do is instead of putting the spark arrestor at the top of the pipe we insert it up about 6" from the bottom into the stove pipe--it will soot up when it's up that high, but when lower just a couple of whacks on the pipe and it's good to go if you need to whack it all---the stove doesn't burn big pcs of wood, so a good supply must be on hand, but it heats up the tent and cooks food great IMO, for its size---also it won't burn through the night, but that's due to it's size---chris

The pipe go right up through the peak of the tent? Looking at the one pic with the stove - It appears so. I don't know if 850 is in my league for a pack tent - though if it was - that is about as ideal a tent as could be had! I have a wall tent (12x14) practical for horse activity though certainly not for hiking in. I may hold off of the one in the opening post and save up for one following yours. Though by the time I get there - I may end up with a couple rhino gps's. Heh! What are your thoughts of the price for what you received? Not critical of it - is the material pricey for production - or do they have a market for this and thus the price fits the demand?
Also, the stove - that collapsible? What is the weight of the stove?

If I did pick up the opening post tent - I was thinking of taking out the 14oz floor dropping some weight off there - not sure if that is integrated in with the integrity of the build.

Thanks for sharing that tent CSutton - reminds me of the Kenetrek price of boots to choose from... as much as I would like to have them (esp after trying them on...) though 200(+,-) is about my value for boots.

pipe goes straight up next to the center pole--it's priced along the lines of the Kifaru tents, which are also lightweight and good, but these are a hair cheaper---the stove weighs 3lbs or so--I think I have the small stove--here's a link to it, although it's hard to read the stuff on the large stove you can see some info there--it packs up nicely, yes you have to screw it together, but it's not that bad after you do it once..

That is great info. Thanks Chris.

Appears a whoop load easier to setup as well. On the one presented in the opening post - looks like a lot of guy-lines to stake. I would imagine w/o the floor it may drop several pounds... may be a viable option for the price. A definate easier pack in with the one you have as well as yours reduces to a much better packable size.

I weld collapsible camp stoves as a hobby - not sheet metal fabricating though that stove sure inspires me to look into that for foot packing action. Horse packing/truck base camp settings - the metal (16g) holds good heat though the weight is close to 10x's a 3lb stove as you have linked above...

If I was to alter one aspect of the tent you have, I think it would be nice to have a 3 foot wall - though the roofing element of such action may harm the pitch for run off, etc. However, at 8' center - that may not be a concern.

Great info. Thanks again.

no prob on the info....

3' walls are always nice, but that would mean it would weigh more and you'd need more poles, which again adds more weight, just depend on how much weight one wants to pack---of course if it had loops and you had trees you could suspend everything with ropes in this case....

the ti-goat tepee isn't a perfect circle when set up, it's offset from front to back--so your best headroom is from the door to the center pole--

it's surprising how close you can get to the edge of the tent, like I said we slept 4 guys with our gear(4 backpacks and rifles)--two guys left and two guys right, gear and wood was at the front and some at the back---

the other site to check out is

www.kifaru.net

they have lightweight stuff also, but it costs more or it did when I bought the ti-goat stuff......chris
