I read a paper last year that stated that one big reason for the decline of mule deer in certain areas is due to better range practices. This has led to a decrease in the amount of sagebrush in some areas, which for this study was in the winter range. Shrubs are mucho important during the winter as they can often be the only browse above the snow. SO, cheatgrass could be responsible as once cheatgrass get a good foothold on an area they burn more often. Cheatgrass will burn approx. ever 3-5yrs while sagebrush steppe's natural fire return interval averages about 30yrs. This faster occurance of fire can and does totally remove all sagebrush from an area.
