Yeah, I have thoughts about the Texas drawn hunt system. I'm glad it's open to residents of other states (or really, anyone), but I don't love that there is no preference at all given to residents, especially considering how few public hunting opportunities there are in Texas because of the...
Nothing here, but I'll keep applying. That $3 fee is just not much of a barrier to entry, is it? (Which explains why more than 5,000 people apply annually for the better hunts offered...)
Have you considered a suppressor? If they're legal to hunt with in your state, they can oftentimes dramatically reduce the felt recoil. It's something new to buy, sure, but so is a rifle--and if you like your larger caliber rifles, it would make it so you don't need to buy and set up another one.
What's interesting to me about the alleged damages ($3-7MM for diminution in value because of the trespass) is that there's a pretty solid legal defense to that. Either there was no trespass, in which case, there's no liability; or there was a trespass (airspace), in which case, there's been no...
Thanks, as always, Buzz, for your insight and information. Seriously, so many of us rely on you and appreciate it.
I'm a non-resident of Wyoming. To answer the question posed, I think it's bad that the allocations are going 50/50, but I think Sy's goal here (and others) is to probably get...
So, um, they actually gave me the data. I don't have all of it yet, but I thought I would post the one that jumped out to me. The guided bighorn sheep package (the ONLY drawn bighorn hunt in Texas/the other one is an auction). So: last year, for that hunt, there were:
62 people with 16 points...
Can someone help me out? Until very recently, when you pulled up the hunt map on the Wyoming Game and Fish Site, say for the elk hunt areas or antelope hunt areas, the county roads were prominently outlined in orange/yellow. It was a pretty easy way to see public access. But when I got on today...
It’s like Schmalts said earlier. We need to be looking at the root of the problem. The federal government handing out student loans has caused the costs of college to skyrocket. Get serious. If loans weren’t guaranteed, no rational private lender would bet $200k on a kid to be able to pay it...
Well, I made the FOIA request this morning. My suspicion is they will tell me they can't produce the information because it's somehow "confidential by law." But we'll see.
Resurrecting this thread. Three years into this cubed system. Has anyone had any luck coming across the data -- number of max point holders, median point holders, etc?
I guess anecdotally, has anyone in here drawn one of the super hard hunts (sheep, antelope) and if so, how many loyalty points...
Lots of good tips in this for the OP. I started my western hunting with antelope as well. Four points is still plenty to draw some of those eastern units with decent access. It's not gonna be great, but it will be fine (I've killed several bucks on those eastern units). You'll still get lots of...
I don't know if anyone is getting priced out right now or not. Probably there are plenty of people who are priced out of the hunt they want, but not priced out of hunting--and so I agree with you that, if what you want to do is hunt, and you don't much care what animal or where, there are almost...
We're not talking about demand. Of course they could jack the prices up and there would still be demand. We're talking about what's fair, not what the market will bear. The whole point I'm making is that this is a resource that should not be a simple "free market economy" resource. I don't want...
Agree. And beyond that, this is a resource that probably shouldn't just go to the people who can most easily afford it. I think of it similar to how I think of national parks. I'm fine with a lottery system to determine who can go to the parks that get super crowded; I'm not fine with just...
