Live and learn i suppose. I will have to post how it tastes on here. My bear was mowing down the grass but was also taking in mussels and crabs too I’m sure.
I’ve heard they are great eating and they do group up well. Super fun to catch! Halibut are like reeling a wet sweat shirt but I’ll take...
We were scared straight by stories of guys going too fast in shallow water. We wanted to only extra expenses to be taxidermy and shipping meat home. One boat dinged two props going up Rocky Pass. That is the only boat mishap I heard of that week.
Thanks! I feel lucky to have caught one. It tasted amazing! Really nice texture. We never made it over that far. Would possibly run up into Duncan canal if I ever had the tag again. Looks like a cool area up in there.
I definitely plan to go with two other guys next time. That seems to be about right for the amount of tags and for being able to bear hunt efficiently.
Kuiu is next on the list for me. 3/3 kuiu tags were filled while I was there. Those folks saw far for bears than we did. How was your hunt? Feel free to pm if have time.
Days 5: The morning was dedicated to taking care of my bear. Then we got out for some fish. Got some more rock fish but in between Yelloweye's, I hooked into this 32" Lingcod which is essentially my non resident limit for the year as you can keep one between 30-45" and one 55+" which is...
Day 4: Another beautiful day! We couldn’t believe our luck. Fishing yielded more rockfish but no halibut. Maybe a Yelloweye or two. A fun fight but too bad you can’t keep those buggers any more.
Decided to go on a sight seeing mission and hunt a different part of the island that we had yet to...
Day 3: After letting the bear cool in the boat all night, we were greeted with beautiful sunshine yet again and the hard work we had worked so hard for. After taking some more pics of my brother with his bear since I was unable to the night before. We worked together to break it down. The melon...
On to the hunt
I thought the Tongass National Forest was a rainforest? 4.5 days of sunshine and very little rain over 6 days of hunting did not live up to the billing but please don't think I am complaining! The weather was better than we deserved.
Day 1: My brother and I were too excited to...
First I would like to thank the man who who showed me it was possible to go on a self guided black bear hunt in Alaska and in his words, "lowered the hurdles" for me to turn a dream into reality. @Big Fin, thanks a ton big guy. I thank you for the inspiration and knowledge you have given me.
I...
I look forward to posting! I did ask Bill at Calder about a crab trap and he says the large # of otters in the area has wiped about the Dungeness which I was sorry to hear! I would be happy to hear reports of the contrary if anybody had any.
I had the chance to have an awesome conversation with Bill this past weekend in Boise. Seems like an awesome guy. I appreciate your advice! I feel like not leaving the boat is the best choice. I will be hunting with my brother so one of us can stay with it.
