I agree with idelkslayer, who wants to hunt a wilderness area, fly in to a remote airstrip, and have hunters all around them? The Idaho F&G wants to manage a quality, wilderness hunt. I would be upset paying the NR fees, air costs to be dropped in, only to have hunters camped near the airstrips...
Great read. For me, I've used a 270 win for many years and tried others, but that trusty old Remington has taken 20 elk and shot placement with accuracy is the most important. Just knowing that you can take that rifle to the range every year and it shoots where it is supposed to makes me more...
Lemhi is a good zone. Hunted a few times. Weather play a big role in where they are at different times. Access due to steep mountains. I've hunted there a few times lately. Lots of elk in there.
Tore my meniscus in 3 places last year in July, and had it operated on in August last year. Was able to hunt 6 weeks later in September. Ended up getting a deer and elk in 2 days. Feels great after a year now. Your body will tell you when you're doing too much. IMO and according to the ortho.
If you want a cow elk, Idaho has OTC, just pick a zone and talk to a few locals. Make a call to the biologist in area and you're set to go. DIY is definitely doable, learn the area with google maps. Fly in and rent a vehicle or drive. IMO. Plenty of cows, can be easy or hunt hard.
Congrats on the draw. I saw 4 nice rams during a deer hunt there last year. They were in the Perreau Creek drainage on the east side of the unit. Just off the road straight up from the Shoupp bridge.
Good luck, lots of sheep in the unit.
Unit 8 is a great unit for elk. Some really big bulls. Hunt up north by Williams. Try to stay within 20 miles of that town. PM me if you want more specifics.
If you're a newbie to elk hunting, coming into an area that you're not familiar with and trying to hunt bull elk is going to be difficult. I'm assuming you're going to be hunting bull elk. Might want to consider a cow elk, maybe coupled with deer. I've spent a lot of time hunting/scouting both...
Not sure what a Ford Transit is, but I would want a 4 wheel drive truck for that area. The Panther Creek road is usually in good shape, rain or snow can change that quickly. I hunted deer last October there and had to turn around due to snow depth driving a 4x4 1/2 ton. At that time, most of the...
Randy11, I agree not much of a secret as witth moose hunting. Hunt early and late, hopefully during the rut. They seem to favor certain types of habitat, willows, swamp areas, river bottoms, etc.
I like the trying the calling idea. Wasn't going to use that, but it would be exciting to have a...
Just drew a bull moose tag fo Idaho 12-2 Lolo Pass area. Never hunted there. Number of tags went down this year, I'm thinking wolves had impact in lower moose numbers. I'll get a wolf tag or two and try to put a dent in their population up there.
Any help where to start scouting for moose would...
Here's an idea i used for my small framed daughter. I had a 30-06 Savage Model 110 and had a muzzle brake installed. Lower recoil, although a bit louder. Plenty of gun for deer or elk with light recoil.
I had the wood stock cut and made shorter to fit her. Since she has grown up, now I put the...
In that late hunt a lot of the elk will have migrated down towards Valle. I've seen elk about 10 to 20 miles east of Valle before the powerline crosses the road. The unit on the south of the highway. There are also a good number of resident elk in that area. Good access and roads if it hasn't...
Gutless is the way to go, although I like leaving the leg bones in place to use as a handle and as leverage for packing out the meat. Since I process myself, I think it is best to leave as much as whole as possible to minimize waste. Most quarters can be packed out by putting a quarter over your...
I've done both, 1st time you could pair up with some one that has hunted elk before for some pointers or head out yourself
are you hunting Camp Navajo in AZ? great area if you are and has a lot of elk
Hey John got drawn for elk in Idaho Unit 37 for elk - do you know of any good spots to eat? Don't necessarily want your secret spots, just a good place for solid chow.
Yep mnbearbaiter is right skip the PBs, no penetration on elk. I shot an elk 4 times with them and retieved the lead in the elk. They didn't penetrate at all.
