Good luck, KC. If you happen to find a land ownder thats just beggin to have some elk removed (ya right!), let me know. I actually killed that one elk I saw, so my tag is filled. But my wife wasn't able to go, so she still has her tag and I'd love to see her take her first elk.
Good for you guys, KC. I hunted the first season up there and only saw one elk. I, too, got the letter you mentioned (as did the rest of my hunting pary). Problem is, it's only good on Private land and I don't have any of those types of contacts.
Congrats on all the scores, guys! Great to see some Colorado success. We had an RMEF committee meeting the other night and of the guys in the room I was the only one to have connected...and all I got was a calf!

On kind of a last minute whim, I went out to fill a doe tag over the weekend. Ended up shooting a yearling. Weighed in without guts, head, skin, and lower legs at a whopping 33 lbs! Looked more like a coyote than a deer! She oughta eat well, though!
Yep... that's probably the best advice one can get... you find em where they are....
I talked to the DOW guys in Walden when I dropped off my head for CWD testing, and they said its been a screwy year all round. Elk aren't being found where they normally are in some areas and elk are being...
Bo,
My late season tag is for unit 371. The hunt runs from something like 11/23 through 12/01. I do this hunt with a bunch of guys from the Denver RMEF chapter committee. Last year I think 8 of us hunted on and off and 5 elk were killed. This year I think there is going to be 11 of us. It's...
Bowman,
Sorry to hear about your knee, man. I knew there was an issue with it but I had no idea it was serious enough to consider surgery. Good luck with that and let us know if you need anything.
I've since checked, and there are no cow tags left for 161. I am sort of considering unit 27...
I spoke to an elk biologist out of Hot Sulpher Springs about this once. I don't recall the exact figures he gave me, but I was surprised. He said the cows come out earlier and due to a lesser amount of snow... that I knew. But he also said the biger bulls stay up high for a long time. Again...
Micheal,
Where ya headed for the late season? I've got a cow tag for the late season in 371. My potential plans for hunting the third season are not set in stone and depend on whether leftover tags are still available for 161, but if you'd like to go maybe we could go together? Just a thought.
DS - I do hunt a lower part of that unit, although the unit does encompass plenty of higher altitude areas. I like the lower part because it is good transition habitat and holds elk all year round. Plus, over the years, I have found a couple of natural travel funnels that usually produce at...
