So last year I shot a huge buck (OK, it was the ziploc buck because he was soo small), So this year I wanted to one up it!!! I didn't one up it by too much, I am going for the 10 year plan to get a big 4X4.
I was hunting with my boss on his property south of Lava Hot Springs in southeast...
Firehawk:
Is a 300 Grain bullet good enough for elk??? :)
Yep! I shoot a 180 grain InterBond from my 300 win mag for big game and that has plenty of knockdown power. As far as tougher bullets, any bonded or A-Frame bullet is the way to go.
Opinions on bullets is like opinions on ice cream...
Sounds familiar!!!! Weird weather, we left early (from Unit 19) as well because of snow. I know, snow is good, but sometimes safety changes that!!! People have to be pulled out by cat's to get out of the Gospel Hump area every year, and I didn't feel like paying for that!
Good luck on the...
So I thought this was a weird article to be in a deer hunters publication...
"Calf Elk Saved from Wolf Attack"
Happened at Warm Springs Air Strip by Bonnieville Campground.
Huh, the wolves hunt by roads....
Yeah ElkGunner, I know, excuses are like a$$holes, everyone's got'em and they all stink! Kind of like "it's too hot to hunt, the elk are all up high, they are all in the dark timber, the wolves have eaten them all......."
I kind of liked you old waders, just walk in the snake river with pants...
Back early from our Elk Hunt.....
Drove up friday to the Selway Zone in Idaho. Hiked in 3.5 miles and set up camp. Rain and snow for 2.5 days and only one elk bugled back at us. It was weird, did not spook any elk or deer the entire time. We humped it all over the mountains and hunted hard...
I think we have a pass to go over about at 7,000 feet, but not worrying about it anymore! We also have a backup spot!
Thanks for the info! And the luck!
I am going up to the Selway Zone tomorrow, anyone heard about snow up high???? And if so, how much???
Heard that some roads were closed, but got conflicting information.
Oak: Too funny! Forgot about the "Ziploc Buck"
hehehe
Last time Moosie said he got a small animal, an elk, he said it was a spikey. Well that "spikey" had 6 of them on each side!
I am using the Federal Gold Medal Primers, magnum style. I also noticed that the powder almost fills the cartridge so I think I am around the 90% full percentage on my loads.
It looks like the next thing is to try a variation of powders. Yep! It is fun! (I think...)
Calif. Hunter - Yep, they did use 165 gr bullets, I reread it last night. Once I am rich like Moosie, I will go buy other bonded bullets and test those.
This is a whole new world for me. I was super nervous shooting the first load, err, bullet that I reloaded. I only checked the scale 10...
Thanks for the info! I will try different powders and primers and see if that makes a difference. I thought it was my bad shooting skills, but then put in factory loads and I shot good! :)
Might have to stick with factory ammo this season!
