I had my heart set on a Browning X-Bolt, short action, .308 or 7mm-08. Went with the 7mm-08, but there were multiple things I just couldn't get over:
1. Rifle weight/design caused the muzzle to jump when fired (I prefer how my Rem 700 Sendero in 7mm Rem Mag and Rem 700 30-06s recoil over this...
Remington has had significant quality control issues with these rifles. The components combined make such a tremendous rifle on paper I still purchased one, in 30-06. Immediately took it to a gunsmith to make it right.

Vortex Razor HD LH. $1K+ scope you can get for under $700. The 1” tube options are on closeout on Amazon, including the 2-10x40 With G4 BDC reticle.
Vipers are solid, too, and I have nothing against Leupold...
If using the rifle for typical hunting (not extreme long range) or casual “plinking” I believe Remington has these guidelines to break in the 783 that started this thread:
A. If using Remington ammo to break in your barrel, be sure to shoot at least 200-300 rounds
B. If using ammo from another...
I agree 100%: Rem 870 with slug barrel. Even though I can (and do) rifle hunt in WI I also frequently use my Rem 870 20 gauge with Brenneke slugs, open iron sights, confident and successful out to 100 yds.
I live in WI and have rifle hunted deer here all my life. It would be a great place for you to start - OTC tags, enough public land (and farmers willing to give permission), and your neighbor to the north. A lot of the good woods bordering farm fields have been bought up by IL hunters...
I like this topic...
Remington 700 Hunting Rifles in 7mm Rem Mag or 30-06. I can't even bring myself to go with a 300 Win Mag because it just seems blasphemous in a Remington 700, which I know makes no sense. Hey, I'd also never get a Win M70 in 7mm Rem Mag...
BUT, also love lever action...
I‘m planning to dial in a 30-06 using factory ammo with copper bullets. Have historically always used lead. I’m debating between 165gr or 180gr, with the intent of using the setup up to 400 yds on deer but also up to 200 yds on moose. Any thoughts are appreciated....
It’s my understand that optimal is 26” for 338 Win Mag, 24” for 338-06, 22” for 338 Federal. But, 24” will work fine for 338 Win Mag.
Where are you hunting? If open areas with longer shots I’d go 26” as the additional 2” would provide slightly better trajectory over the long distances without...
My Grandpa’s Savage Model 24, and Buck 110 Folding Hunter. He passed in 1993 and last used it to shoot a raccoon with me by his side in 1992. There’s still some powder from that shot in the barrel...
True that - I had a 7mm-08...HAD. Sold it because I preferred the ability to maintain sight picture with my 7mm Mag. Completely related to rifle design and barrel weight: 7mm-08 was a 6.5lb Browning X-Bolt and 7mm Mag is an 8.5lb Rem 700 Sendero “laser gun”.
We need a separate “recoil” thread...
Great bench rifle, so I’ve heard. For bench shooting, I totally get the goal of finding THE perfect round.
For hunting, I think we can answer the question by answering THIS question: what was wrong with a 30-06, 270, 243, 7mm-08, 308, 7mm Mag, 300 or any of the other capable and historically...
