We were down there Sept. 8th and 9th. Did not hike in very deep, but were surrounded by hunters and campers. I suspect you could find a little solitude in the Snowcrests, but it will take some hiking. I will hunt this unit again, but will be backpack hunting on foot for a week or more. No...
This bull didnt make a spund nor move for the entire hour I watched him. Sat there and watched and listened to all the bugling/comotion. Never made a peep. The rut seems to be on, but its slow going.
Heres some motivation for you guys! This guy was rutting hard had about 20 cows with him. One rag but he wasnt into it really. Anyone wanna throw out a guess on this guy? 8×8 pretty clean.
Well, I just got back from the Notch Cabin. Was a VERY quick trip (2 nights), and we did not see a single Elk. My Dads Jeep got a flat (good thing we had a spare) and between that, the lack of time, tons of livestock (cattle, didnt see sheep), and plentiful homemade fajitas at the cabin we did...
For me, this is almost as important as having bear spray and a gun...ALMOST. Just dont wander right into an area you cant see very well, and if you do, be prepared to see a bear. Actually expect it so you will be planned ahead and will be "less likely" to panic and make a mistake. I always...
Well an update, was able to make only one scouting trip about 3 weeks ago. I did see elk but mostly towards the Southern end of the range. Im sure this will change with the season tho...I did see plenty of elk but very few groups of mature bulls. Only two groups actually with only one decent...
If you are hunting several miles from your truck make sure you get the meat you are leaving behind in a nice cool spot and deboned. Take the meat a small distance from the carcass and tie up in a tree in the shade. This has served me well. Good luck and like others have said spoilage is much...
So I have a related question for the biologists on this forum. Seeing as how you get frequent phone calls requesting vague information, and a mpre thought out and detailed series of questions woulf likely take even more time to communicate, would it be more convenient if hunters were to email...
I want to thank everyone on here and elsewhere who continue to help inform. I have been disgusted with the treatment of public land and will continue to educate myself and others on these issues and hope to be a contributing factor someday in securing access to public land for all outdoor...
Thanks for that advice. We always try to remain realistic about our expectations. Sorry to hear about your dissapointing Durfee hunt. Im assuming you held a bull tag? Archery or rifle? Where you able to turn your season around? I have been deer hunting this area for years...and have...
Hello fellow enthusiasts,
I did not draw any permits this year, but my brother in law did. He drew the 411 rifle tag and so now the preparation begins. I have been applying for this tag for some time now and have always thought that if I drew I would talk my Dad into flying into the Durfee...
Well Elk or not Im gonna be climbing some rocks this Summer/Fall. I honestly hope I dont see a Bull like yours way back there...that would be a tough one too pass. ;) Good luck too all heading that direction, maybe we cross paths scouting. Ill be solo scouting most of the summer...Id gladly...
