Agreed. I drew an either sex tag last year for 27/181 in the leftover draw. No points. I am a resident, so that may matter. Don't know.
The leftover draw is what Colorado gives for those who did NOT draw their first choice.
The tags available in the leftover draw are just that: left over...
Not that that's what I had in mind <cough cough>...
Yep, I'm pretty much convinced to do the new gun route.
Not getting rid of the TC, though. I really do love the two barrels I have, and the thing is dead-on accurate.
Plus, I like the idea of single-shot. Makes me practice more. I can't...
I have a related question.
I have a Thompson Encore with a couple of rifle barrels (45-70, 270), and love it.
There are muzzy barrels available for the Encore, so I would just have to buy a barrel.
Here's the dilemma: I can buy a muzzy barrel for my Encore for over $300, OR I can buy a CVS...
No, just download the maps at home. This is how I use it, since I usually don't have service, or it's spotty at best.
The maps download relatively quickly at my home, and you get all the functionality without service.
Also, it seems to not take a lot of power to use the maps.
Always a good idea...
Haven't actually used this outfitter, but I did talk to Dave Parri's Outfitting and Guide Service here in Colorado. Saw him listed on gohunt, and called him since he was in the area I was going to hunt.
When I called, he was all booked up, but the guy actually spent time talking to me, listened...
I like the nat geos, and forest service.
However, I don't carry much paper anymore since I got the onx on my iPhone. Cannot say enough good things about that app.
*Probably* would be nicer to have it on an ipad, but then that's a bit more to carry. Besides, my wife got the ipad, I just have...
Thanks for the info.
I was in 181 last year during 1st rifle and saw one big 4x4 buck right across the meadow from my camp. Didn't have my phone with me, of course, so I didn't get a picture. But boy I'll be looking for him this year if I can get a tag up there!
Very similar thing happened to my neighbor across the street.
She had been having pains in the jaw and shoulder off an on for a couple of months, but didn't want to go to the hospital.
Finally one night it got bad enough that her hubby said "We're going to the ER."
She wound up getting a stent...
I use it on my iPhone 5c. Absolutely love it. Have had no issues whatsoever, the maps load reasonably quickly at home, and I can mark waypoints, leave tracks, the whole shebang. I keep my old gps with me as a backup in case of power loss, but that's just paranoia.
Last year I used nothing but...
Ditto on the combo elk/deer hunt for 2nd rifle.
My experience (not vast) is that there are much fewer hunters in 1st rifle, at least where I've been going in units 18/181 (NW part of the state).
2nd and 3rd rifle see a TON of orange, and most of the work is just getting away from that.
Last year...
Two years ago I was walking through some thick stuff (with an elk tag), and spooked a group of muley bucks about 20 yards away. So thick that I didn't see them until they were stampeding away.
Just about jumped out of my shorts. Sounded like a herd of buffalo!
Hah! Moose tag? What's that?
Sadly, I know that for a lot of guys, firearm=truck hunt. I don't get it. How many elk are standing 100 yards off of the road?
Randy's Rule of minimum 1 mile from the closest road has always seemed like a good one to me.
But what do I know...
Thanks.

Thank you so much for the info.
I saw some decent elk (4x4, no trophies) come out of 181 last year in first rifle. Also saw a BIG muley buck in the field across from my camp.
'Course, I didn't have my camera with me, and he was gone before I could get it, but he was big.
The background on my...
Hey All,
I posted the same message in the elk forum, 'cuz I'm considering that as well.
Anyone out there have any experience hunting CO unit 18/181 muzzleloader?
I'm starting muzzleloader hunting this year, so I have zero experience, but
I have been hunting unit 181 the last couple of years...
Hey All,
Anyone out there have any experience hunting CO unit 18/181 muzzleloader?
I'm starting muzzleloader hunting this year, so I have zero experience, but
I have been hunting unit 181 the last couple of years during rifle season.
Anybody been there during muzzy season?
Would love to hear...
Hey All,
Anybody with bear hunting experience in CO GMU18/181? I have hunted deer and elk there, and have seen tracks and scat.
I was wondering if anyone has ever hunted there for bears? I'm thinking of trying it this fall, and using the opportunity as a
scouting trip for elk and deer later...
My first deer last year was at about 2:00 pm.
Second one came the next day at about 9:30 am.
Both whitetails.
It *seems* to me that whitetails are more active all day than muleys, but that's just my impression. No real science behind it.
Worth every dime you paid for it.

Just got back from Nebraska. Rut had just started.
Had my nephew along for his first hunt ever. Weather was about 75 deg and dry dry dry. Figured the rut hadn't started yet.
First day, we saw a buck chasing a couple of does, then saw him charge at and grunt at another buck that came into the...
Definitely have a keeper there. The elk's nice, too!
Seriously, thanks for the story and the pics.
398 yards, eh? Wow. I can't even SEE that far!
Congrats.
