Greetings One and All,
I am looking at going bear hunting for the first time this fall (bought the tag but couldn't find the time last year :().
I'm thinking of going in the Steamboat Springs area, which encompasses 10 GMUs.
Just wondering if anyone has any insight into bears in general and...
Hey Fellow Hunters,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience hunting the public lands in Nebraska's Upper Platte and Plains regions?
I've been going to Pine Ridge the last few years, but thought I might branch out a bit.
Not looking for GPS coordinates of the deer (unless you have them of...
I've been hunting there a few years. Last year I took my nephew for his first hunt. Never saw it so crowded. Don't know what happened, but there was a LOT of orange. Saw some deer, but not like years past.
Well, yeah... I could see that, if you're a good elk hunter. I'm not, at least not yet.
Also, in my defense, last year I was coming off of knee surgery in mid-August, so I wasn't exactly mountain-goating it up and down the mountainsides. :)
If I can get to where I find "the spot" in this area...
Thanks for that Cedahm. I was wondering how much they got with the last couple of snows. The rest of this week looks pretty mild. I wish I could get up on Thursday, but work gets in the way. I'll head up Friday early, set up camp, and scout as much as I can on the spots I've picked out.
I...
Well, being the stubborn sort, I'm heading up to unit 181 again for 1st rifle elk. Haven't been successful yet, but I've seen elk come out of there, so I know it's not a dry area. I've always heard that you need to hunt an area for 5 years to get to know it. Hope that's true. This will be...
Headed up to 181 on Thursday evening if I can manage it, early Friday if I can't. Have my three spots e-scouted, now have to see if they pan out.
I hope so -- it would be nice to an elk along with a lot of exercise!
Simple. A calm Wyoming day: bullets automatically know to compensate for wind in Wyoming!
One day in Wyoming the wind quit blowing for 3 minutes. All of the antelope fell over.

I talked to CPW up in Steamboat Springs. A VERY nice lady (they are always nice and helpful in the CPW offices) gave me some pointers on some good places to look for bears.
Apparently, they are getting quite a few complaints in and around town, including up around the ski area.
She also told me...
While we're in learning mode here...
I'm a newbie muzzy owner/hunter. I have a CVA Optima V2 which I think is a great gun so far. Right now I am firing the 245 gr PowerBelt Aerotip bullets, with Triple 7 powder.
In the couple of hours of shooting I have done, I have noticed that if I don't...
Thanks for that, Cedahm. I am looking over the CPW hunting atlas (which now has bear data), and I will give the office up there a call in the next few days.
I only get about 3 days to hunt, so I am hoping to narrow it down a bit.

I put the TruGlo rings on my CVA Optima V2, and it certainly helps.
The biggest problem I am having is that the rear sight (the peep) doesn't seem to glow much, so it is difficult for me to center the front sight in the peep.
Granted, I'm not as young as I used to be (aHEM...), but I want to...
Thanks for all the replies and info.
As it turns out (due to CPW suspending leftover licenses for a couple of hours on Tuesday), I did NOT get the leftover tag I wanted.
What I did get is a tag for the Steamboat Springs area.
So my question shifts a bit: Anybody out there have tips/info/guesses...
I thought about the OTC w/caps, but I'm hoping that there will be some leftovers for the area I am hunting. They typically don't all go out in the draw.
Hey All,
I'm looking to pick up a leftover tag for NW CO bear this fall. Never hunted bear before.
Anybody out there have any insights/tips/warnings/stories/jokes for me?
I'll be in the GMU 18/181 area.
I have a muzzy elk tag for the area, so I thought I could possibly pick up a bear tag as...
onyx maps
I bought the iPhone app, and it's the best thing I have done for hunting. You can download and cache the maps, with all the layers you would want, and then use them in the field without needing cell service. It uses the gps on your phone, which doesn't take much power.
I tested it...
