I've never used any hunting, but probably would if I did any bird hunting where there was a lot of shooting. Always wear ear protection for practice shooting, chain saw, weed eater, blower, mowers and tractor work.
Me too, haven't owed anybody money for a long time.
Real estate all paid for, pay cash for vehicles and other large purchases, just the routine monthly utility bills, credit card pay off each month, and taxes.
Yep, have one spot where there are no trees suitable for a treestand so we tuck into a fence row behind a couple scrubby cedars where the deer come by real close.
Myself and partners have killed a few from that location, archery and firearms.
I'm not a fan of those ground blinds either, I feel...
If starting from scratch, I like a fire pit with the top flush with the floor surface, rather than elevated walls around it like shown. If it's chilly outdoors and you are sitting around one with walls, your feet and lower legs are cold.
A couple other common things I see with fire pits...
We own several farms and I've yet to see any big home run tax advantages. A couple things you can do:
a. Large pieces of equipment such as tractors can be purchased for the farm without paying sales tax. This could include a truck or UTV if your CPA will go along with it.
b. If you have...
Sounds like a great plan if you can swing it. I've got a hunting farm with cabin 5 hours away and really enjoy the place. I don't bother with the farming, just cash rent to ground to a local guy. Would suggest you do the same, a side benefit is someone around the place in your absence to...
Pretty easy to fill the freezer in the midwest with fat, good eating whitetail does. Tags are pretty cheap and the deer are plentiful.
I shot a buck and four does last year in IN and IL.
I'm in the same boat.
It's easy to find hunting partners when I set everything up, provide transportation, a place to hunt, do most of the meat care and processing, etc.
I like the solid finishes rather than transparent on treated lumber. Prep and staining the deck is the easy part, what really takes time is all of the railings, spindles, built in benches, etc.
I've got cedar on everything and it holds up just fine, so long as you keep up with the maintenance which involves a paint job every 5-7 years.
Also think real wood just looks one heck of a lot better than all of the artificial stuff.
For cedar to actually "rot", it must either be very old, or...
A couple buddies and I were ice skating as kids, got real thirsty so drank from the creek.
All of us wound up sick as dogs puking and running back and forth to the toilet, and we all missed school the next day. There were cattle a few miles upstream.
Your father in law reminds me of my dad. We had a lake house as kids and every trip up there was a bunch of work, took lots of the fun out of it.
We've had a lake house in northern MI for ten years or more now and I made up my mind when I purchased it that it was not going to be that way. If...
Another option you can probably do at your local bank is set up a CD ladder.
Depending upon the duration of CD's you buy, one will always be coming up and available soon, so you can get your money without penalty if needed.
Didn't know they had roundup ready alfalfa, I'm going to try some. Would be just as attractive to deer as clover and easier to maintain.
I did 7-8 acres of soybeans this year that worked well.
Problem with staying in a motel on a western hunt is that you may wind up an hour or more away from your hunting destination. Get's pretty tiring adding all of that unproductive driving in the dark on both ends of the hunting day.
I have all of the necessary gear now, but a couple different...
Welcome to IN, I live about an hour SE of your new home. Can't disagree with your complaints about IL, but the deer hunting is so far much better in IL than IN I have purchased a farm and built a hunting cabin in southern IL as well as lease another big farm. The quality of deer hunting and...
