Spring like weather on the mid-Oregon Coast. Daffodils are coming up with many other plants. The bees are out checking the flowers that are out. Steelhead are in the river and Crabbing is good.- muskeg

Equipment for carrying hand-held radio
When I was hunting Arizona (radio legal) I ran into a bow hunter in the field that was wearing a Madonna headset of some kind. His brother was set up miles away with a spotting scope directing the stalk. Hours later I saw him way down the canyon dragging a big buck .. must have worked.- muskeg

Favorite coffee while backpack hunting
A half packet of Swiss Miss per cup of Folger's instant packet worked for me for many years on backpack style hunts. In my later years of Mt Goat & Blacktail hunts we just started packing up some good ground coffee, some filters and a cone … either a one cup cone or regular cone .. dripping it...- muskeg

You don't need to go to POW to get a good Black Bear … there is very good Bear hunting where there are left over tags. Hunt the mainland where there are both Black Bear & Brown Bear. Unit 1A. Day rates in Ketchikan are a little less than $300 … you can book thru your cruise ship or book direct before your day on shore. The guide will meet you at the ramp. It's usually about 6 hours from dock to dock. So figure about 4 hours of fishing. There could be weather days that time of year. 3...- muskeg

The person that 'rents' you the weapon must have an FFL license and be in the weapons rental business. I would just give an ATF officer a call and ask your question.- muskeg

I have been through this in Alaska … it is illeagal for you to posses a weapon as a non-US resident unless you have the BATF permit for your weapon or what weapon you are going to posses. Just give the Feds a call and ask.- muskeg

Bear Hide Prep
All Black Bears in SE need to presented for sealing. Un-frozen and the skull needs to be skinned out of the hide. Evidence of sex needs to be left on the hide. Penis sheath or vagina is OK. SE Alaska Blacktail
Most of the time early August for me is a pass. Too warm and many times too buggy. I still find good success in later August or early Sept for my first buck. It's usually cooler and many of the bugs have cycled out. -

Before salting you must do the head ... turn the ears, split the lips & eyes ... take the tail bone & feet out. Flesh the total hide very well. I use 30 to 50 lbs of salt on a big SE Black Bear. Lots of people travel from Ktn jetport to Klawock on Island Air Express ... they meet the jet schedule and are IFR, so can fly in weather and darkness.
