When a bear tries to eat your camera

I have several pics of bear mouths over the years. Definitely seems to be younger bears doing it each time.

It looks like this one is going to be worth about $800 to his taxidermist! :)

Building a new rifle verses buying

I would buy the Ruger American already chambered in 450BM for about $500. Then put it in either a Boyds wood laminate or one of the new Magpul American Hunter stocks. Either way you have a solid rifle for WAAAAAAAY less than $1700!

    Lions Without Hounds

I have called in four (that I know of) while wolf or coyote hunting. It might be slightly better odds if you found fresh tracks by running roads after a snowfall and then setup to call. Considering that I live in lion country and call several days a week in the winter its a testament to what a...

    E-callers for bears

Here in Montana e-callers are not allowed for bears but I regularly call them in using hand calls. The secret for bears is CONTINUOUS calling. If you stop calling they will stop coming and since they may be some distance away that means you may never see them. If I was in a good area I would run...

    Montana Lion Taxidermist

Phil Soucy (and wife Barb) in Libby is recognized as one of the best cat taxidermists in the country. I don't think he does any advertising, all word of mouth and he is BUSY! On the safari sites he is the #1 recommended guy for leopard and lion. http://philipsoucy.com/awards.tpl

Bears are coming down no food in the mountains.

Up here in NW Montana we have a HUGE huckleberry crop this year. They will be feasting on that for quite some time!

    Anything you don't like?

I think the MeatEater program is one of the best shows on outdoor TV! Rinella is a quiet, reflective and respectful host, video and production quality is always high. And the fact that he shows preparation and consumption of the animal is great. I really think he is an OUTSTANDING ambassador for...

Powassan virus: Potentially fatal tick disease that can be transmitted in minutes

I agree it is somewhat awkwardly written. But it was just posted as a news blurb obviously Consolidated from an article on the topic. And while it is certainly rare two people suffering from it right now is concerning.

    Practicing bear defense shooting

Having spent the majority of my life in law enforcement, hanging around hunters and other "gun guys", I think that only doubling the size of groups fired under stress is pretty optimistic. I would guess that when under a close range attack, most folks will just turn and run or start banging away...
