Thanks for taking the time for sharing your perspective. There's a lot of criticism in here that I agree with, I just disagree with the remedy.
1. I'd like to see more utilization, my forest has been pretty successful in using the Good Neighbor Authority with the state to get projects...
I think this is an aspect many people don't understand. We're not talking about Florida here, you can't burn in 40% and 60 degrees out here.
The bare minimum goal of a prescribed fire is to consume fuel at some level, and the conditions must be hot and dry enough to accomplish that. And if you...
True, we don't know exactly how it happened. But we do know someone was arrested. And again, not to diminish private property rights, as things currently stand, I do not see the level of damage warranting an arrest. The actual monetary value of damages seems to be at most 40 acres of grass...
Ah, okay. Thanks for the response.
My interpretation of that was there was active fire to the north, as intended as part of the prescribed fire, and while active, not necessarily out of control. And then yes the uncontrolled slop on private, which I believe I read was pinned on an internal...
I was trying to get at the potential value of forage lost to determine the severity of the potential crime. The Forest Service pays out all the time for damages to private property. I'm not suggesting the landowner is bad, he has a right to be upset, I don't see how arresting someone solves...
There is an Agency Administrator/Line Officer that signed the burn plan, who ultimately bears the legal responsibility. That person was likely not on site.
Of course the rancher has a right to be mad. Arresting the burn boss doesn't bring the grass back. I'm not a rancher and not trying to...
well, I'll bite I guess. Among the various jobs I've help for the Forest Service, my current one would be described as wildland firefighter.
I'm curious, do you think the Forest Service would get better at managing the land with 90% less funding? Or should the Forest Service divest the land...
Wild speculation here as I have limited California experience and am really just going off of name recognition, but I figured places like Shasta Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc could be a start. Coastal bears are very intriguing!
For the longevity of the grizzly bear species, an interconnected...
Randy's podcast earlier this year with the former Grizzly Bear recovery coordinator Chris Servheen touches on some of the California griz questions. https://hunttalk.libsyn.com/grizzly-bears-past-present-future
I shouldn't, but I guess I'll speculate a bit. Seervheen states that there used to...
I've been following this closely. If you're looking to get riled up and be mad at yourself for losing an afternoon, I recommend the comments here and on the original post. https://wildfiretoday.com/2022/10/20/forest-service-burn-boss-arrested-after-prescribed-fire-escapes-in-oregon/
Since this is a pro-public land website, it is worth noting that James Brown is endorsed by Attorney General Austin Knudsen. The Austin Knudsen who advocated for building subdivisions for the recent influx of out of staters over acquiring more land for wildlife and hunting.
I've been blaming the series of moderate to severe hail storms the state received in June. Knocked the berries off. The patches I checked in early June looked to be shaping up alright. Up high snow had lingered longer than normal, and the spring had been fairly wet in most places. I don't know...
He certainly had the moves.

likely update to this situation.
based out of Delta Junction at the moment, been raining on and off for the last week. Started with a good shot of a couple inches, and sporadic after that. No growth on the fires over here, minimal smoke for now.
My boss shared it with me with me when the rain came in 2020. Won't forget the conversation, or the smell, or the color of the air.
Happy to hear you're getting some rain.
