I recall it being mentioned that the guys charged did it last year also, and informed the sheriff and game Warden that they would be again. Did not sound like they were relying on internet forum advice...
Yeah, gutting and taking it out whole would have been better for cleanliness, but what I really want is an elk, and I'm generally looking for those in places that a drag would be impossible, so was glad to get the experience.
Also, I wanted to hang it for a couple days so didn't start...
I'll admit that @wllm1313 /the charts/the corgi was my first hunttalk mancrush, but yes, @Dsnow9 won me over with the Elan hat.
Yep, need to remember to practice all year, not just waiting for pre-season. And I didn't realize I needed to flip the brim, that must have been it!
Definitely...
Definitely. Even tried between elk and deer seasons, as the first made me realize the importance of doing so, and still straight missed an easy shot.
Definitely a great feeling, and yes, I expect the next pack out will be more trying. I'm a better hiker than hunter, at least, though that's...
Couple more, apologies for the lack of brevity.
Hung it all Wednesday, had to leave town Saturday morning for a funeral, so packaged it all Friday. Ended up being up until 2:15 am to get finished, big day. Had backstrap, the heart, a tenderloin before we left town.
Damn, feels good to have...
Journey started fall of '19, when my wife and I moved from Denver to SW CO for her job (plus, who wouldn't choose the San Juans over the Front Range?). Lacking a job, I decided I should contribute to the household by getting an elk. Having barely even shot a .22 and with zero hunting knowledge...
Not 71, but sw co - had some bucks halfheartedly locking horns a couple weeks ago at the house a little under 8000', but they've gotten scarce since start of second rifle. Could really use some weather...
Failed (again) to fill my elk tag. Was my first cow tag, which had me feeling optimistic, as the last two years I've had easy opportunities on cows (but only had a bull tag). However, only a 5 day season, and 2 of the mornings I had prior engagements, so more like 4 days of hunting. Got into elk...
I think this was my fifth attempt at getting a cow tag for this year, finally succeeded!
Now the question is whether I made a good call - I only really have 3.5 days for this first season tag, but I figure I'm more likely to succeed on a cow with 3.5 days than 9 days for an OTC bull.

"When he saw white in the pines, he took a shot at what he thought was an elk." Oy.
First success today (of any type of hunting).
Saw a few more, only took the one shot, bringing my lifetime grouse batting average to .333. 8,500 - 9,200 feet.
Thanks to bigfin for making me realize how much easier it is to shoot one off a limb...
