Had to check in on this thread for my annual dose of long distance depression... living in TX tends to make me wax nostalgic about MT hunting. Thanks for the ice water on my neck. Talk about a sad day, to not turn up any deer in habitat like that!
Been turned around a few times in timber and snow, just like you're describing... The sharper the terrain features, the less issue I have. Where you really get mixed up is when you start tracking a bull in snow, and he just keeps running loops in the timber. That takes some time to realize...
My definition of raghorn is any bull with a rack small enough to cut up for random projects... or dog chew toys. That would include some smaller 5x5's and 6x6's.
Seven years into marriage, and it finally clicked a few weeks ago that I was absolutely expecting to hunt almost* every weekend from Oct-Dec... somehow this realization made her LESS mad than she had been while we were arguing about that family event on the archery opener.
"almost" - the...
Take that .270 and make HuntTalkMan proud... Never had an elk hunt ruined (that I know of) by blowing a grouse's brains out with my 30-06. But I've sure killed a lot of grouse hunting elk!
Well the fat lady sang for me... I'm still dealing with weekly bloodwork and crap. Not going to make it to MT for this one. Damn shame, I say. Maybe @EYJONAS! can borrow my hunt plan and go take pictures of the ram I would have shot...
I'm just going to submit for your consideration that S&W makes an 11oz .22mag revolver with a 3(?) inch barrel. Mountain lions are little wimps on the bullet soaking scale. And you know you want that little pocket rocket for grouse during elk season anyways.
You haven't lived till you've ground sluiced a covey of huns standing next to the still running pickup truck...
Helps when the farmer lets you drive his field edges.
I have it on good authority that some Arkansas folks have confirmed Bigfoot is an interdimensional being who can open portals to another dimension. You might lose your whole sheep with this strategy. Proceed with caution.
Fully agree! I happen to find the mental discipline an awful lot easier with a rifle than a bow, but Joel Turner is the only reason I can shoot a stick bow with any semblance of accuracy.
@neffa3 I'm going to make a suggestion before you give up on archery. Get in touch with Joel Turner of Shot IQ and talk to him. You don't have a shooting problem, you have a decision making problem that leads to bad shooting. Don't give up on archery just yet.
And get off the narrow single...
I'm with Gomer. Hunt till dark, then cut wood, filter water, etc. I'd rather have two hours of camp chores to do in the dark before I even get to eat food. And then I can usually burn another couple hours just watching a fire burn. And I usually expect to be hiking two hours before daylight if I...
