    Forum donations

I’d be willing to pay a one-time fee, monthly, or via Patreon. I think a Patreon page is probably the most appropriate approach, but also acknowledge it won’t get at the problem of spam, hackers, etc., like putting the forum behind a paywall. Putting up a paywall, even with a minuscule fee...

    Wrap or no? Brisket poll

I wrap with butcher paper, usually around 170 through to 190 or so, but I’m using a BGE, so I don’t have the space for a full packer brisket. And it typically has a great bark on it by the time I wrap it.

Tips for brisket on a smoker

I subscribe to the Franklin method, which is a departure from how a lot of folks do it. That is, 50/50 coarse salt and pepper rub, run my smoker (BGE) a little hotter (275), wrap with butcher paper through the stall, and cook to 203 internal temp.

    What's on the smoker today?

I love doing a long smoke in the winter. One of the primary advantages of the BGE (I’m not a militant “BGE is God!” type, btw) is it holds heat (and moisture) really well and doesn’t seem to be as prone to adverse effects of wind or cold temps.

    30 Day Background Check

I’m playing devil’s advocate here, not taking a stance one way or another. Only reason I can think of, off the top of my head, is accounting for the updating timeline of/for criminal records. That is, accused criminal gets arrested and charged for a crime that will prohibit them from owning a...

    Are Deer Camps Dying?

My family is like this. Super territorial and insulated about hunting - territory, tactics, etc. But then they turn around and complain about the lack of interest in the sport. Oh, the irony...

    Are Deer Camps Dying?

My experience growing up in a hunting camp was kind of the opposite. But, the camp my family hunted out of was unlike most hunting camps in our area. In my younger years, it wasn't uncommon for there to be 25 guys (and gals) there on opening morning of rifle season, and even more in bear season...

Non-resident Hunting and the North American Model

Business analysts at McDonald's couldn't possibly have forecast that Americans would embrace becoming morbidly obese by eating garbage food at rock bottom prices. And technology, here in America and in the developing world, has indeed eliminated entire sectors of the manufacturing industry. Has...

    Fixing a broken goat

Same thing happened to a nice whitetail buck my great grandfather killed many years ago. Ended up breaking off a brow tine, and the taxidermist was able to fabricate one and you can’t even tell. Next time I’m at my dad’s house, I’ll take a pic and edit this post to add it.

    Whats your most accurate rifle?

I went shooting with a friend of mine yesterday in preparation for our Montana spring bear hunt. He’s very new to hunting, and, after we went back and forth on brand and caliber, he recently settled on and purchased his first hunting rifle, a Tikka T3X lite in 300WM, and topped it with a VX3...

My old girl is on her way out

It’s tough, man. Like Ben mentioned, I think the time will come where you’ll know. Whether you just come to terms with it, or the pet gets worse and the compassionate family member side of you takes over to give them some peace and freedom from the pain. Bad thing is, it doesn’t get easier with...

    Beginner solo hunter advice

Here are few things I’ve found to be helpful in overcoming small issues that have the potential to become big ones: foot care - I don’t have the toughest feet; even when I was in the army in a light infantry unit and walking everywhere with everything on my back, I had to pay attention to foot...

    Spring Bears With Hounds Proposed

Appreciate your insight, Nick. As others have mentioned, I think you bring some valuable experience and opinions to this thread. But if we accept the premise of there being real threats to bear hunting, in general, don’t we also have to acknowledge the potential for grizzly/hound interactions...

    Mountain Performance Clothing

Likewise on this. I have the Prana Zion Stretch pant in like 5 different colors and, despite them being made by a company whose niche is yoga and climbing clothing, I have found them to be incredibly durable, particularly given the price point (~$89/pair). Also agree on Kuiu. For the...
