    Smith & Wesson

Crown looked ok as far as I could tell with the naked eye. Smith & Wesson was very helpful on the phone and it's being shipped back in the morning. 2-3 week turnaround they're saying. It's just frustrating I'm going through this again with another new S&W. I've read a lot of others have gone...

    Smith & Wesson

I picked up a new Smith & Wesson 686 with a 4" barrel last week. Today I fired it with 3 different hand loads in 357, half a box of factory 357, and a box of 38 special factory loads. I had to max out the windage to get it on paper at 25 yards and would still need a little more to get it...

    .375 H&H, anyone have one?

My buddy in Oregon uses a 375 H&H for elk sometimes. He won it in some sort of raffle and scored about 150 rounds of old loaded ammo from his now deceased uncle so I'm not sure what the bullet or powder is. They weighed 270 grains when we pulled one but we could not identify the make. It's not...

    Re-using Components

I've done that several times over the years without any issue. As long as you're 100% sure what the powder is and where it's going back into I say go for it. I agree with Fair Chase, properly loaded and stored ammo or powder will last a very long time. I've got 15+pounds of Unique and 2400 my...

    Idaho Moose

When I lived in Pocatello, ( 2014-2017) I hunted 68A pretty often for rabbits, pheasants, ducks, and geese. I stuck mostly to the Sterling WMA but occasionally wondered the banks when the water was low along the small pockets of public land. Whitetail were pretty common just about everywhere but...

    Truck using oil

I had a new 03 Hemi that starting using a quart by every oil change while it was still under warranty. At the time, the techs said they were not allowed to tear into the Hemi engine but could replace it if it grenaded on me. They documented the consumption/loss and offered to top it off for free...

    Reloading the 300 Weatherby

I load the 175 grain Barnes LRX with H4831 and a Fed Mag primer in my 300 Weatherby. It was pretty accurate with that bullet so I never tried anything else in it.

What is the 1 rifle you regretted buying or wished you never had bought?

When I was younger and not paying attention to details I bought a Smith & Wesson rifle in 270 Weatherby that someone had cut down to 21 inches. It was a noisy pile of crap that would not group and probably did not offer much over a reg 270 win with that short barrel. I eventually traded it off...

AR Type Rifles for Deer Hunting!

I saw it pretty often when I was stationed at Fort Stewart, Georgia but I think that was mostly fellow soldiers using something that was familiar to them. My dad and uncle did the same with the M1 carbine when they got out of the service in the 60's. I've since lived in Oregon, Idaho, and now...

Dogs are Hunting Partners - Let's see 'em

Package deal, they came with the girlfriend. I'll admit they have grown on me and the black one will flush/chase rabbits. They also enjoy treeing cats.

    Moose guns.

I killed an Idaho cow moose with a 30-06. Due to a scope malfunction on my 338 win (210 grain Barnes) opening morning I ended up switching to the back up 30-06 I keep in the truck and only had 165 grain Federal Fusion on hand. Not an ideal moose bullet in my opinion but it sure worked. Single...

    One Bino For Everything?

10x42 is my vote as well. I hunt Idaho, Montana, and sometimes Oregon depending on my budget. I've found 10x42 has been the best all around size for me. I did get a pair of 12x42 last year and agree they're difficult to use free hand but on a tripod they are great. If I had it to do over again...

    Smoked Chex Mix

I used Hickory this time. About 2 1/2 hours on the 165 degree heavy smoke setting. The mix recipe was just whatever was on the box of Chex and I threw in some Cheez It's.

    Smoked Chex Mix

Fresh batch of smoked Chex Mix today. I use the perforated foil pans the $ store sells so everything really soaks up the smoke.

    open, peep, foxed or variable

I really enjoy using open or peep sights when the conditions allow it. I had an eye injury in Iraq about ten years ago so I have good days and bad days when it comes to using open or peep sights. On my 300 wsm and 243 I keep variable power scopes but on the 45-70 I run a Leupold extended eye...

Problems with the Winchester model 70 extreme weather?

I could not be happier with my 300 wsm Extreme Weather. The first ammo I tried was Factory Hornady 165 GMX. It's also the only ammo I tried after seeing how it grouped. I've got 240 rounds through it so far without any issues or complaints. It's quickly becoming my go to rifle for everything.

    Deer sausage.

I keep the two built in grill temp probes inserted in the string ends on each side of the grill at all times plus randomly spot check a few in the middle of the casing with an instant read thermometer. I do rotate them all every hour just in case the grill has hot spots. When you puncture the...

    Deer sausage.

I broke in my new Camp Chef Deluxe this weekend with a batch of deer/bacon sausage. It's the Hi Mountain hunters blend sausage kit that Sportsman's sells in case anyone is wondering.

    Hello from Montana

Oregon raised but bounced around the country/world in the Army for a while. I recently settled in Missoula, Montana after giving East Idaho a try for a couple years. I don't do a lot of fishing but I hunt just about everything. I'm very into revolver and lever action rifle hunting when the...
