Like several others have mentioned, the Standard 160gr Accubond would be an Amazing Choice. Our family has taken everything from Antelope-Canada Moose with Accubonds in other calibers. They work, they hold together well, and they flat kill stuff. I wouldn't go to the LRAB unless you are...
One of the better options out there. I have taken several critters with a 200Gr Accubond out of a .325WSM, and my Dad has dropped everything from Antelope to Canadian moose with a 180gr Accubond out of a .300WSM. It's a Gnarly bullet!!
This is my kind of thread!! All I hunted with out of my .308 were 180gr Partitions. Saw several deer drop to them and a nice bull. Personally, I'm a big fan of 180gr .30cal slugs for deer, elk, heck... Sasquatch... For a .308 and Whitetails, pick your favorite bullet in a 175-180gr and you...
Good Luck Sir!! Should be a fun trip, and If you have confidence in both rifles and they shoot accurately you shouldn't end up with bad experiences. Bear encounters happen, but not all that frequently. It's worth a thought to know what to do should you see a bear up close, but I wouldn't plan...
It is true that Elk can keep their feet for a significant period of time after being hit. In my experience they don't tend to go that far unless they are pushed. I remember an Elk that my Dad liver shot a few years back, again with his .338WM. That elk was about 400yds off and bad shots...
Stopping a wounded elk is a gnarly prospect. I've watch an adrenaline laced elk soak up 5 well placed shots from a .338WM with 225Gr Swift A-frames and keep his feet, and the bull that was standing right next to him took 8-10 steps after meeting a single 150gr Partition out of a .280Rem. In my...
MTMiller, you bring up a very valid point. Especially since the WSM will be on a short action and a .280AI will be on a long action. In all reality, a WSM may be a couple ounces lighter than a .280AI because of the shorter action.....
With a 200gr slug you might want to shade to the slower burn rate and shorter extruded powders. The first three I'd try would be IMR-7828SSC, H-4831SC, and RL19
MTmiller brings up a Very valid point about the wind. I'm not sure how tall you are, but if the tripod will have to have parts of the center column extended for you to see standing, it's likely to be fairly unstable in wind. especially with a heavy spotting scope on top of it. I have a tripod...
JWhunter,
In all seriousness... You should check out that Cooper model 92 in the classifieds and see if you can get that for $2500. It's light, Crazy accurate, good caliber, available now......... I've always drooled over the Coopers and that deal is seriously good. At $2800 it's one of the...
What's the drive for building custom? Better accuracy, different stocks, different barrel, very light weight...?? Or are you more wanting to pick up a really quality off the shelf rifle? Cooper, Sako, Nosler and many more make Crazy nice rifles in that price range in all sorts of Elk killing...
TMVikings,
You may search for years trying to find the "perfect rifle" I spent years making and trying to analyze those sorts charts, trying to figure out what I really wanted and got lost in the details. In the grand scheme of things, the perfect rifle in My honest opinion isn't going to be...
Another vote for Lapua. Picked up a batch a while back for a .308, pest prepped and most consistent factory brass I've ever seen.
Other than that, I've typically worked with Winchester primarily because it's always been available for the WSM's...
