Got into camp two days early, Had a backpack malfunction so had to drive into town to get it fixed but still had most the day to scout.
Opening morning I got onto two cows. I was having a hard time figuring out what to do but decided to get up on a ridge and see if I could get a move on them...
So I'm 31, a self taught hunter, pretty successful at small game hunting, and just breaking into big game hunting. I don't have any good friends who hunt and my brother is really into it but never makes the time between his wife, kid, and job. Does anyone know of any groups or happy hour meet...
Despite the backpacking store I called saying they didn't have one my size, I drove down to look for myself and they had one left that fits the backpack. All is well, thanks.
I called their saying they don't have the size I need. I figured out a decent way to tie it off my taking the female part off. I can at least scout alittle more tomorrow and I'll just drive into town and if I can't find one oh well. Still hoping for an elk down ill just have to make the leads a...
I'm solo hunting elk, the season starts Saturday. I've scouted the area previously and have a 5 mile hike in everyday to my area. I just got camp set up and started packing for a scouting day tomorrow and noticed the male piece to the waist strap is missing. When I bought the bag it was there...
Ptarmigan is one of my favorite hunts. Last year was my first time trying and we managed a couple birds our last little trip.
No luck this year but I'll probably give it a go one more time this Friday.
After finding ptarmigan success last year, I've been really trying to get a couple for a mount but have not been very lucky. Decided to change things up and go to one of my grouse honey holes this weekend
The mountain is very steep. Down low is sage brush, with coniferous forests up top. Mixed...
Ya I am betting that the elk will be gone. With it being an OTC archery unit on the front range I am sure it will get a lot of pressure. I am scouting a second spot not too far away from this spot as well. That way I have two spots narrowed down.
And ya I am considering requesting a couple of...
I don't hunt with dogs, and it took me about four seasons of getting skunked until I just kind of figured the birds out. I am running at 100% success the last three seasons, I go a minimum of twice a season, and three times the first season that I actually started getting into birds.
My first...
Just got back from my first scout trip. Saw some elk, and I'm adding plans to my plans. I am thinking of heading up there a few more times and setting up some game trail cams in the area during archery and muzzleloader seasons so I can see how they are moving or if they are leaving the area...
I read the bill in its entirety. It requires CPW to have a plan within a certain time frame and reallocates funds to have the plan based on research. It's a money thing at the end of the day which is why it needed a vote. It is NOT reintroduction bill in terms of capturing wolves and releasing...
Those are pretty cool stories about wolves, thanks for sharing. Also, that bill doesn't reintroduce wolves, it simply said that the state needs a plan for it if it were to ever happen. It's no secret that wolves are migrating into colorado. This isn't a conspiracy, we all knew this was happening...
Sounds good, Maybe Ill hike in this first scout trip to check out the burn area. Also, didn't think about the folks who piggy back off the forums. I removed the unit numbers and the name of the fire area.
Hey everyone, been awhile since I have been on but it is that time of year again. I look forward to sharing some adventures again. Anyhow, I am new to big game, and did not draw my deer tag this year. I ended up picking up cow tags in Colorado for the first rifle season (Oct. 16th to 20th). None...
We got into the birds at about 10,100ft. Between 10k and 10.5k seems to be the most consistent from early to mid season for us.
We hunt lower and higher and have gotten birds but that 10k to 10.5k seems to be the sweet spot.
It was a late start to the morning, but my brother and I reached the parking spot at the bottom of the mountain at about 7am. It was cold, about an inch or two of snow covered the ground and mountains were surreal to look at. The Eagles Nest Wilderness in the distance looked particularly angry...
I need to buy pigeons or other birds to help get my brittany trained. I'd like to crank out this training and hit it hard this fall. If you know where I can buy birds for upland training let me know.
Is there any way you could share what your worksheet looks like. I do expedition planning as well that I would do for backpacking. It works great for the safey side of things and having the plan left with a loved one to hand off to S&R if that ever happens. I would love to see how hunting data...
