My hunting partner and I were scheduled to leave NC for MT on our elk hunt today. But due to my buddies house being the current bullseye for Florence, there is a strong likelihood that he's not going to make the trip this year.
We always drive, taking turns, for 2 solid days, which is a...
On top of this thing causing potential destruction, it's also causing havoc on my elk hunt! My elk hunting partner lives at the coast of NC, I live midstate. The plan was to leave Tuesday afternoon for MT. He doesn't want to leave his wife at home alone if it hits NC. So now we're waiting to...
I avoid shooting too many arrows at a time. If you do, you take a risk of developing a bad form/habits while trying to make the shot when tired. Well in advance of the season, I'll shoot until I feel like it's not smooth, and I'll stop. Closer to season, I'll shoot maybe a dozen arrows, and...
Ethan, same here. It was slow and HOT! My worst opening day since the early 80's! But, great fellowship and food. Basically, went to a social event, and a dove hunt broke out!
I've regretted and second guessed bad shots alot more than not shooting.
Also, not shooting may get you another shot at the same animal that doesn't realize you were there. A bad shot, not so much.
Teej89, I've been scaring doves for 40+ seasons. My take on your map is, I only hunt that close to a tree line if I have a good dead tree along the edge, and I'll favor that. They will often land in a dead tree before pitching down into a field. But if you get too close to a tree line, you...
I've said for years, Sept 1st should be New Year!
I'm with you on the dove hunt! Especially when taking a youth or kid along for their first hunt with a good group of friends!
All I could tell was that he was drawing a firearm as he was being tased, simultaneously. It looks like he was firing and the officers immediately returned fire. But it's hard to really tell due to the speed of how fast everything went down.

I like to marinade it with Moore's Marinade, throw it on the grill. After flipping it at least once, put some Tony Chachere original on it, and grill until completely done. That's my favorite anyway. The wife said that she like that better than most wild game.
Obviously, the best training for carrying a heavy pack around the mountains, would be to carry a heavy pack around the mountains. What I said about my "training" by running, started out as a way to get in shape, which turned into a love of running, which had multiple benefits for me personally...
I wonder if he had a locator device (Spot, Inreach) with him? Obviously, he may have, and many things could have happened causing him to not be able to use it if he did have one, but I wouldn't go alone without something.
I hope he's alright and found soon!!
Yea, it seems to be hard to find someone to dedicate the time and effort to do an elk hunt from NC. Alot of folks talk about wanting to go, but never do. A buddy (also from NC) and I are going back to MT in a few weeks, so I can't be of any assistance. Good luck, and I hope you find someone...
Update from the OP...me, since I started this thread over two years ago, which was posted it in May '16. I started running around that time, and by that Sept, I was amazing how much better I felt when I went back, even my hunting partner commented about it. Two years later, I run 7-10 miles...
It's great to hear that one of ours (NC) is fighting a good fight for public land! I've heard nothing but good things about Senator Burr, and this just adds to it!
