As an ow er of a 257 AI and a Ruger m77, go for both.
My 257 AI is built on a tried mauser and is incredibly accurate.
The Ruger m77 is one of the smoothest actions around. My 1976 vintage is in rebarreled to 280 AI and shoots the lights out.

Hornady sst shoot the best for me… and they kick HARD. 4-5 shots out of a 7 pound pump and I get a headache.
They expand well too in deer. I’ve only ever had 1 or 2 pass through, they other few were under the hide on the off shoulder. They make a mess of you hit bone.
Every antelope I’ve harvested was at least a week after opening day. They’re not booners but decent bucks. Use your glass and make a stalk. If you scout a big one, get on them asap. Otherwise look till you find one you like and make a plan
If the cylinder walls aren’t scored up you could get away with new pistons and rings. A lot of times companies will sell them a few thousands of an inch over standard diameter.
