    Looking for public land advice in Northwestern Wisconsin

    If you travel a little farther north Polk county and Burnett county have some county forests along the St. Croix River. Check out the counties GIS maps. Douglas County in the NW corner of WI has a ton of Public land.

    Found Elk

    He was on public land in the open grass and sage in a slight depression. I was up glassing and kept seeing magpies fly in and out. So I had to go see what was going on. The warden said they were going to use the rack for education. He did not find any bullets or arrows in the body.

    I found this guy in WY a few weeks ago. The Warden has him now (wouldn't give me a salvage tag). I figured maybe someone on here may have lost him. He sure is a nice bull!

    Check out the BMA west of horse prairie creek off Lehmi Pass rd. Usally see some goats down there while Im elk hunting.

    Always see plenty of yotes. P-dogs and Fall Turkey depending on location. Plenty of rabbits around just watch out for tuluremia. Grouse hunting can be good depending on location.

    Need to make room and pay for a new gun. So I'm selling my Browning 1885 Highwall 7mm mag. It is in very good shape. I have hunted with it so it does have a couple of marks on it. Very accurate with 160 ABs. Nikon 3x9 buckmaster on it. $850.

    270 WSM or 30-06

    The 140 ab in the 270wsm is a fine elk load. I've shot 3 elk (2 bulls) with my 270wsm with 130 ttsx's and never felt lacking for killing power. I would shoot 140ab but the gun likes the barnes better.

    Like Blake said have chains and tools. Coolers with frozen jugs of water since it might be warm. Bring a pack and skin and 1/4 the lope where you shoot it. Dragging sucks. 308 with 150 grains will work great. With that broken ground it should be easier to get in for a closer shot.

    Dry creek rd west of the I90 exit is public, private east. It is private where it meets powder river road. Go to the Johnson county map viewer on their website. It shows all the public roads. Get a blm map and highlight the roads you can drive on.

    410-21 archery permit

    He can hunt any unit that allows harvest of an elk with a general tag as well as the zone and weapon where his permit is valid. So yes if he does not have luck with his bow he can hunt the general season for cows (assuming 417 is open to cows in gen season).

    Fish finder for canoe?

    Do you have one on a boat already? If you do just get an extra ducer and power cord. Mount the ducer on a 1x4 and c clamp it to the canoe. We do this for trips to the BWCA.
