    7mm-08.... Avoid the shoulder?

One of my boys killed his fist elk with a 120 grain ttsx out of his 7-08. He hit the shoulder and the cow dropped on the spot. The bullet did not exit, but blew right through the upper humerus. The shot was 273 yards.

300 win mag. Accubond bullet weight thoughts for elk..

180 grain AB has worked well for me.

    .308win and monolithic bullets

I also shoot the 168 ttsx in my .308. I have not had the chance to kill anything with it yet, but it is super accurate.

Thoughts on using a military surplus ruck sack as a first pack until I can save up for a high quality/value pack for Western Big Game hunting?

As others have said, just go hunt using what you have. You will learn what equipment changes you need to make with time. My worthless advise is not to get hung up in the "gear race" everyone seems to be caught in. There are plenty of packs out there that are in the $100 or less range that work...

    .308 Copper Monos

I have been able to get great accuracy with 168 grain TTSX with my 308. Velocity is just a hair over 2700fps. I use IMR 4064 compressed slightly.

Does anyone have experience with these primers?

I have shot 800 of their small pistol (4.4) and 300ish of the large pistol with no issues. Would definitely buy again, especially at that price.----R

Packs outside of the normal recommendations.

This is the pack I got for my boys. They can carry all they need for a day's hunt and still pack an elk quarter out with it. We have only used them for 3 seasons so I can't speak to long term duribility. I use an REI pack that I paid $100 for over 20 years ago. They are a bit noisy on brush...

    .243 for my son

My son has a Ruger American in 708. The stock is trim and slender and fits him pretty well. It is light which he likes. It is not as nice as my other son's a- bolt or my vanguard, but for the price is a decent rifle. The main advantage we can see is the weight and that we could find it in a...

    300 win mag rifles

I had a Vanguard that would shoot 180 grain accubonds under an inch. Great rifle. I like them enough that when I could no longer handle the magleum recoil, I bought another one in .308.

Mom and Pop find in 243 win.

My Remington 788 has accounted for 4 mule deer, 6 pronghorn and 3 elk. I shoot 100 grain partitions. It is not my first choice for elk, but if you are careful with your shots it sure gets the job done.---R

    Weather Expectation CO near Montrose/Ouray

I have hunted that area fist rifle several times and have hunted in a t-shirt one year and in 18 inches of snow the next. You should come prepared for cold and snow, you can always take off a layer if it is warm. Good luck-----R

    Browning A Bolt 3

My son has one in 708 that shoots great. He has taken 3 elk with it. I am not a fan of the plastic trigger, but would not hesitate to own one of the price was right. Between the it and the vanguard, I would go with the weatherby. The browning will be close to a pound lighter than the standard...

    Thermos or jetboil?

Don't underestimate the impact on your mental state a hot cup of coffee or a hot meal in the middle of the day can have. I carry a stove (not a jet boil, but same result) and make coffee for me and hot chocolate for the kids. It is a great morale booster on those long cold days.

7mm-08 for elk with 140gr Accubonds

I know talking about the 7-08 being a suitable elk caliber on HT is preaching to the choir, but I couldn't agree more. My boys have taken 3 elk with this caliber and I have been very impressed with the results. We use 140 grain TTSX bullets not the Accubonds and we are extremely happy with the...

Changing rifles because of excess recoil.

I picked up a weatherby vanguard wilderness in .308. I have not been able to get it out to the range yet, but I am impressed with the feel and weight so far.---R

    Idaho Mule Deer

Hi Conner. After chasing radio collared big horns around that country a few times, my best advise is to plan on it taking 3-4 times as long as you think it will to get anywhere on foot. It is some rough, steep country. Good luck to you. ---R
