For whatever reason, elk never seem to show the prevalence that mule deer do. The Laramie Range is a hell of a CWD case study. Even with crazy rates of CWD in deer, the prevalence in elk has stayed at (ballpark) 5-10% even while the elk herd has dramatically increased in population. I might be...
I’m not a moose expert, but I always cut some moose tracks when I’m tracking elk in the timber. I rarely see bull moose in the open after October, so if it were me I’d probably hunt them like I was hunting bull elk, cut a track and follow it.
What public land is unhuntable to you? Maybe if you’re holding out for the deer or elk tag of your dreams, but you can hunt deer, elk, and antelope all over the west every single year if you choose to. Most of us residents don’t draw the glory tags either. I certainly never have.
Some fun anecdotes that have nothing to do with the topic at hand. If you guys had people from around the country clamoring to hunt your home and the places you love and grew up in you might understand.

The first week of November has always been my favorite for mule deer.

I’m sure this will piss lots of people off, but I would love to see Montana go to a general deer tag system like Wyoming has. Draw a region general tag with a limited number of tags per region. If you want to hunt Region 7, draw one of X number of nonresident tags.
A state should take care of...
I hadn’t spent a day looking for deer until yesterday. I took a break from the mountains and went back to visit my people’s homeland in the northern reaches of the state. I love hunting the places I did as a kid, and to make it even better my dad came with me.
We found quite a few mule deer, a...
It’s been a bit of a grind so far in Montana. Fortunately, as an un-elite, flannel wearing, wood and blued rifle carrying, non-influencing hunter I embrace the suffering and yearn to toil in the mountains. Until yesterday I had been spending the season trudging around in places with very few...
