    Blood trail for elk

There’s no guaranteed blood trail on an elk, but if your bullet makes a good wound channel in the right place they’re not going to go far. I’ve had both the 168 and 180 TTSX not exit out of a .300 win mag. Both bullets did a lot of damage and neither bull made it out of sight. If I had to pick...

    Fly Tying/Fishing Thread

If I’m not using a fly rod I fish with the same Ugly Stik I had when I was 12. My knowledge of gear fishing extends as far as a black and gold Panther Martin, and that’s it.

    Fly Tying/Fishing Thread

I was amazed at how well this thing throws a sink tip and a relatively large streamer. I don’t usually fish many articulated streamers, but it handled a full size dungeon no problem. The Sonics are phenomenal rods, I have one in a 5wt also. My dad has matching Sage RPLs in 5 and 7wt that he...

    Fly Tying/Fishing Thread

@Hem I fully intended on buying an IonXL, then looked at the Streamer X, and in the end I preferred this one. My dad also went on and on about his new 6wt and coerced and bullied me into this purchase, but I have to say it is a pretty badass little streamer rod. Sage Sonic 691, the...

Probably 9’, but still considering 10’.

Rifle setup is to scope as fly rod set up is to _____.

I have been very impressed with my Ion XL 8wt and I’m seriously considering getting another one in a 6 wt for a dedicated heavy nymph/streamer rod for my local river. I kind of want to take it easy on my old Sage 6 wt now that it’s old enough that it’s a $250 repair bill and a year wait if I...

The color would be really cool, but it might be too brittle. It would be fun to try.

I’ve always struggled with deer hair flies, which is something I’ve been really trying to work on. I’m getting pretty happy with the results.

Trying out some new streamers. Galloup’s woolly sculpin and a single-hook version of an olive rusty trombone.

Rifle setup is to scope as fly rod set up is to _____.

I agree that the right fly line can make a huge difference, even if they’re stupid expensive. I would say the most applicable rifle to fly rod parallel is that Echo reminds me a lot of Tikka. Phenomenal values that will perform just as well as some of the much more expensive options out there.

    Fly Tying/Fishing Thread

It was a great day. Lots of good fish to be had. Mostly on a pattern I tie and have had great luck with this year, but that one might stay secret.

    Lets see your fishing boat!

It’s time for an upgrade, but the USS Lockwood still gets me to the fish. I’m trying to talk my dad into buying an Adipose or a nice raft.

ISO Affordable, quality lightweight sleeping bag.

I hate to say those things are mutually exclusive when you’re looking at sleeping bags, but you can’t have all of them and have them be affordable. If you’re looking for a 15 degree down bag for most spring/summer/early fall conditions there’s some good 650 fill down options that won’t be too...

Montana shed hunters - have you seen this man?

Most shed hunters probably watch him frequently. They’re all about brown gold, mass, and stacking bone. I’ve always thought shed hunting was a suspicious activity.

Spend my money on a chronograph

I tried to figure out ways to spend less money but ended up getting a Garmin and it kicks ass. The ease of use alone makes it worth the money.
