Can confirm, saw a wounded crane whoop up on my cousin's lab one time. Luckily he got the dog away and finished the crane off before it could do any damage.
As far as taste, I haven't tried crane personally but I've been told by others that it tastes like dove. Are cranes like other waterfowl...
Why would people take proper care of the meat when all they want are the antlers? I've known people who hunt that either don't eat wild game, or try to find any excuse they can to say the meat is "spoiled". It also pisses me off to see the Texans stop in town with some board-stiff...
@Cheesehead Sounds like a money grab by the outfitters. Prey on the fear of out of state hunters to sucker more people into paying for services they don't need. I would like to know the state's stance on that statement. A client paying for services from an outfitter isn't their employee, so...
Doesn't this apply to everyone who chooses to use a bow or other primitive weapon instead of a high powered rifle with scope? We choose to use less efficient weapons in order to increase our opportunity or increase the challenge, knowing they carry a higher margin of error.
I'm not aware of anything saying you can't stop for gas. Judging by the steady stream of Texans that come through Roswell every weekend, I don't think you'll have much of an issue, although I could see other parts of the state handling this differently since Roswell doesn't seem to care much...
I guess it will be interesting to see it once they work out all the bugs but so far, I'm not a huge fan. I have two main gripes
1. I have to turn on all of the layers every time I log back into my account. Don't know if this is a user issue on my end or part of the system, but saving all the...
I don't have a ton of elk hunting experience, but as it relates to archery hunting, practice as much as possible, as far in advance of your hunt as possible. Also, get your bow checked out by a shop. I had a bow malfunction one week before my hunt. This was partly due to the age of the bow...
In my past research of the unit, I've found the following advice:
1. Get a map of unit 34
2. Throw a dart
3. Go hunt where the dart hit
From my experience, finding elk in Unit 34 is about that easy. I've hunted 34 during second archery, muzzle loader season, and wasted a late season cow tag...
This was supposed to be the year I finally went out to hunt whitetail in PA and NY. Not looking too good for those plans. At least I have my NM mule deer tag that requires zero overnight travel.
A buddy of mine from NY drew a mule deer tag down here in NM, so he's in limbo while he waits to...
Very nice. Looks better than my first knife. I agree with pre6422hornet, knife making is addicting and can become an expensive addiction very quickly. I'm relatively new to the hobby (have completed about 10 knives) and have found that some of the more expensive equipment can be built for...
Bonnie. We named her after Bonnie McMurray from the show Letterkenny. Every time the character walks into the room everyone stops and is in awe of her.
I had been tossing around the idea of getting a dog and had been researching different breeds when this one kind of fell in my lap. I was at...
That's for sure, she's a very pretty pup! Puppy life is good. She's a calm dog who loves laying around, which is great. She's learning quickly and already sleeping all night. She's done a great job of keeping the kids occupied while we're all stuck at home.
Yeah, the responses I got from Republican candidates were pretty much what I expected. The complete lack of wildlife representatives or language supporting wildlife in her bill paints a pretty clear picture (for me) about what her priority would be.
I challenged a response I got from one of...
Thought I'd post this here so my fellow New Mexicans can have the info for the November election. I asked Yvette Herrell for her stance on the transfer of public lands from the federal government to the states. Here is her reply:
"I support the transfer of public lands to either the state or...
We were (thankfully) able to make enough of a stink to keep the commission from locking up three different sections of Picacho last year but I doubt that'll be the last time the ranchers try. They've definitely done some "interesting" stuff down in that area with some of the unitizations and...
glad you found a different potential access point Bobby. As IdahoNick said, perhaps it will enhance the quality of the hunt. Some of the local units seem to be really crowded in rifle seasons.
We encountered a similar issue near town in one of our usual hunting spots over the years. First...
