This is a buck I killed in New Mexico last week. I was hunting him for 3 days before I was able to take a shot I was comfortable with. He was bedding down on top of a knob and it was difficult to get in a position close enough for a shot without him smelling or seeing me. Patience paid off and...
I shot this buck Saturday in Southern NM.
I moved to El Paso, TX last year. Because of my career choice I have not had much time to hunt since moving away from Idaho 8 years ago. I haven't shot a deer since 2009 when I had a chance to do a short hunt with an old friend in Wyoming. All my hard...
fowladict1,
I killed him on public land. Not a lot of public land in the units with left over tags. Fortunately there are a lot of antelope in Wyoming and some of them will stray onto public land. I wouldn't recommend picking up a left over antelope tag to most guys. As long as you really know...
I didn't have very good luck in the drawing a quality tag this year so I picked up a left over deer tag in central Wyoming. The area I was hunting didn't have genetics for growing big antlers but I would be hunting with an old friend Trapper, so I knew I would have a good time and was looking...
My friend and I ended up tagging out on our Wyoming mule deer early and we had a couple days to burn before I had to fly back to San Antonio. My wife wasn't too happy about it but I picked up a left over antelope tag. The first morning of the antelope hunt we look over about about 50 buck...
My deer season started off hard this year. The first day of archery season I put an arrow in a very large buck. I quite hunting for a few weeks and put in a lot of time trying to find him (about 40 hours myself + 20 hours of help from friends). Hopefully he survived but in reality he probably...
My brother Brad took a nice buck opening day of Idaho’s general rifle season. From a half mile Brad watched it bed down just as it was getting light enough to see. He kept an eye on it for an hour to make sure it did not move and then came over to find me. I was able to find him in the spotting...
Fortunatly I've never had a hunt ruined by fires. A few years ago I hunted next to a fire and the animals seemed to be more annoyed by the fire fighers and planes than the fire itself. That fire was different than a lot of the fires this year. Many of the fires this year are burning hot and...
Great buck.
Maybe I over scored this buck but I have a hard time believing this buck isn't at least 140" gross. My first impression was a buck in the 150's. After breaking down his rack I came up with 149" gross. If he doesn't net P&Y, he won't miss it by much. Good luck if you are going to...
I have travel plans for everywhere in the Upper Snake and SE regions and most of the Magic and Salmon Regions. The quality of travel plan maps varies from area to area.
The Challis National Forest Travel Map covers Unit 50. If you are mostly interested in what roads and trails will be open...
I would also agree that if your friend is based in Idaho Falls, 39 is a poor choice. Over half the states population lives in the Boise area, unit 39 is next to Boise, why drive across the state to hunt an area that has a lot of hunting pressure?
Unit 69 is a popular area with people in Idaho...
That is interesting that he was tagged back in 2000. I would have guessed he was a 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 year old deer. Just goes to show you how important age is for a muley to grow a large rack.
Great buck. I wouldn't even hesitate on a buck like that in a general season unit in Idaho. Hard to tell from the pictures but I would put money on him having a gross score over 190".
