I think you already have some good ideas but I'll add some ideas of my own.
Get out and hike this summer and learn the areas you plan to hunt. This will provide you with the benefit of exercise, learning your physical limits and help you learn the country you plan to hunt. Hiking off trail is...
I did a late season elk hunt in Arizona last year. There were a lot of tags in my unit and I heard more shooting than I have ever heard opening day of general deer season in Idaho. I do think it is possible to get away from other hunters if you are willing to hike. In 7 days, I only saw two...
The last couple years I've had the refund from New Mexico within a couple weeks of the results being posted. I had to pay the total amount to avoid paying interest on my card because I didn't get the refund by the time my next bill was due. Last year my brother in law said he had his refund...
It has been dry lately. I wouldn't expect there to be much snow if any snow in 16 right now. There are springs and water sources in a lot of odd spots in the Gila so I wouldn't just focus of the main rivers. Just keep an eye on the weather but don't expect it to be too cold or any significant...
New Mexico's draw system is different than most states. You can draw your 3rd choice hunt before someone draws that same hunt as their first choice. You could still have unit 16 as a first choice unit and have 21 as a 2nd or 3rd choice. 21A has a lot of steep mountains and not many roads. 21B is...
ndhunterman,
I'm sure on most of the late hunts I could find elk without ever leaving the seat of my truck. The rumor is many people road hunt. I saw multiple people road hunting during the general archery season in early
September.
I packed camp an hours walk from the road and for the most...
Here are a few pictures from my late season Arizona hunt. I looked over about 5-10 bulls per day but never turned up a monster. I'm very happy with the bull I ended up with. Many of the bulls had busted up antlers. Hiking hard all day and trying to spot bulls in their beds seemed much more...
I think the day on the calendar has more influence on deer migration than snow. There have been a number of studies on this and show that deer tend to migrate around the same time every year regardless of snow conditions. Snow does make deer much more visible and makes it easier to spot/age tracks.
I've hunted elk in both the Bannock Zone and Lemhi zone. Both wouldn't be easy hunts.
In the Lemhi zone you will find many of the elk require hiking up steep mountains and may be a more physical hunt than you want. The advantage to the Lemhi zone is that you would likely see many more elk. You...
Thanks for sharing your story. Extra hunting pressure can cause them to go silent. When you heard all the bugling, you probably just had the right combination of "hot cows" and limited hunting pressure. They could be bugling just as hard today in the same place. Warm daytime temperatures can...
I've observed what others here have stated. I've witnessed animals walking around smoldering burns more than once. Several days after the burn walking around and bedding in it. Light burns are by far the best for attracting animals sooner. Stuff that burns in July will have elk in September and...
I have the savage model 16 lightweight hunter in 6.5 Creedmoore. I bought it last year and have put about 150 rounds through it. Gun feels great in my hands. The action was a little rough at first but it seems to be smoothing out. The action will probably be even smoother after I put a couple...
Nonresidents can draw up to 10% of the tags in Idaho. There are no set aside tags for nonresidents. In general nonresidents will reach that 10% quota in most controlled hunts. Odds are 3 of the 30 tags will go to nonresidents. Odds are very slim to draw the early October hunt in diamond creek...
300stw,
The F&G doesn't collect solid data on the second tags in relation to mature bucks. The harvest report only counts the number of points on a buck's antlers. There is a big difference between a 2 1/2 year old 4 point and a mature 5 1/2 year old mule deer buck. I don't have any numbers to...
300stw,
I don't have data to support the number of mature bucks taken with second tags. As far as I know the F&G hasn't shared that with the public. I don't even know if the the F&G routinely tracks the impact of the 2nd tag.
However, I do know of a number of mature bucks that are killed with...
The second tag option is one of the worst management practices the F&G has. Giving a second tag to the more effective hunters is much worse than giving the tag to an average nonresident. These second tags put significantly more pressure on mature bucks in general season units. Anyone that has...
In the last 10 years I've hunted Antelope in October in Wyoming 4 different years. I've also hunted them is September. I think the others have given you some good advice. If you can consistently make a 300 yard shot, it will make it a much easier hunt.
