    What's on the smoker today?

First time ever smoking something over the weekend. Smoked a venison roast using Hank Shaw’s recipe. I cured it in a salt and sugar mix for 7 days in the fridge then smoked for about 3 hours at 175 with hickory. Looks like the outside carmalized but it is pretty tasty. I can see how this can...

    Non Lead Shot Placement

Thank you all for the insight! Sounds like as long as the velocity is good I should be fine with my normal target.

    Non Lead Shot Placement

I would like to try out some non lead ammo but have heard that shot placement should be different when using non lead. I typically shoot for lungs and have had good luck with this but with non lead it seems I should aim for the front shoulder. Is this simply based on someone’s bias towards...

    Takedown Gun

Don’t rule out the Rossi takedowns. I have a .22/410 version and like it. Just switch the barrels and it’s like a whole new gun. Mine doesn’t allow for an optic but it is Nice to have the option of a rifle or shotgun or both.

    Convincing the wife to move..

That was another place on the list. It would give the benefits of a city but plenty of outdoor opportunity. The milder weather would probably be easier for her to handle. We would like to try and visit later in the year. I currently just need to be near an airport for work. Is it difficult...

    Convincing the wife to move..

@ElkFever2 We recently narrowed it down to 4 states NM, CO, ID, MT so it’s definitely a contender. I do agree that it is very different if you have never experienced a full winter. I personally really enjoy winter. I have tried to be as honest about winter and cold as I can. Lying or hiding...

    Convincing the wife to move..

I appreciate you having my back @Gunner46. Montana is on our list of places but I want to make sure it climbs that list. Good point @Hunting Wife. I grew up in Nebraska and lived in Colorado for a few years but she is definitely a southern girl. She has been exposed to some Nebraska winters...

    Convincing the wife to move..

So my wife, 4 month old son and I will be heading up to visit Montana in June. Right now the plan is to visit Missoula, Helena, Bozeman and Billings. Now I’ll be honest, I am using this trip as an attempt to convince my wife that we should move Montana. We currently live in Texas and are...

    Hello from Nebraska

Welcome. Don’t forget about elk if it’s on your list. Nebraska has some limited opportunities in the north western part of the state. My step father shot a cow elk out there last year. Good luck out in the sand hills, it’s a fun place to hunt mule deer.

    Breed help

A couple of our friends have labradoodles. Great temperament, very little shedding and you can get a midsize that is around 35 lbs.

    Son's elk rifle

Great find! Sounds like, for the most part, everyone’s folks eased them in to this. I started out at 12 with the 30.06 with full velocity loads. Lighter loads easing into a larger caliber sounds like great advice. Everyone is different when it comes to recoil.

    Woodworking Hunt Talkers?

Thanks ZBB. I was a bit worried about having walnut and being afraid to use it but after the first thing was dropped on them I got over it. Finished it with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal which has held up well for me. Good looking bow! Looks like it shoots well also. Redoing cabinets can be a...

    Woodworking Hunt Talkers?

Not quite on the same level as many of these posts but my wife recently asked for new butcher block counters throughout the house. Counters are done but still need to finish the backsplash. I’d love to make a bow and some calls in the future.

I have been wondering about this also. Thanks everyone for the input. Does anyone have a specific scale they prefer for their maps?
