    Black Bear Maine Outfitters

I have been hunting with Maine black bear outfitters since 2016. In that time I've tried three different outfitters (four, if you count my 2014 hunt with a NH outfitter who also does Maine hunts). I've switched outfitters to learn which ones are good and which are not, but I don't want to...

    Bear markers.

Are these markings all relatively new? Bears are not social, although they'll tolerate one another if they have reason to (food). Marking is, of course, a territorial expression so it seems very unlikely that multiple bears are marking the same territory at the same time. Most likely you have...

338-06, I think this is the one...

What did you choose instead? Certainly there is more .338 Federal commercial ammo out there now than .338-06. Right now, Federal makes five loads for .338 Federal: A 200-grain PowerShok, 200-grain Fusion, 185-grain Fusion, 200-grain Trophy Copper, and 200-grain Vital-Shok. My go-to is the...

Montana spring bear hunt region 1

Thought so. Thanks. As much as I'm into rug farming, I've never done a spring hunt. We don't have them out here, and whenever I see one on YouTube, I can't help but notice that the bugs are hell.

How to Pick a new hunting round?

I'll answer in humble-pie mode because I don't reload, so its always factory ammo for me. Of course, this does involve an indirect bullet choice. In my experience, the bullet is the only major change between commercial rounds. As a short-range woods hunter, cartridge accuracy is a secondary...

What store has the biggest physical selection of optics on hand?

I've been to a Bass Pro in New Hampshire and a Cabela's in Maine. Both have outstanding selections of scopes, though the Bass Pro didn't have too much in the $2k-$3k range. They seemed to work mostly in the $500-$1500 range. The Maine Cabela's seemed to have everything. Although this is far...

    New rifle

I'm hopelessly hooked on Savage rifles. I've tried to give something else a chance, but I always come back to Savage. Most recently, this is because they're the only ones making anything in .338 Federal. I was committed to getting an X-Bolt a few years ago, but I've since cooled to that. Got...

    shortages

I've been watching this ammo-pocalypse as a sort of twisted hobby since March. I only got into hunting in 2013, right smack in the middle of the Obama Ammo Shortage. Fortunately, that shortage did not affect centerfire hunting ammo to any serious degree. I also swore "never again", so I am...

300 Win Mag passed the Walmart Test!

Core Lokts are fine bullets if used within their operational limits. I discovered after some time that my guns don't like the 180-grain Core Lokts, but they love the 150s. Most of our range time involves Core Lokts. I have never had core separation or serious fragmentation on any game...

    Winchester ammo

Not sure which Winchester load you're talking about. I tried some Winchester white box 180-grain .308. Both of my .308s did NOT like them - bad groups. When I later discovered that my rifles didn't like 180-grain Core-Lokts but DID like 150-grain, I asked Savage about this. Perhaps these...

    Poll: Do-it-all freezer fillin' rifle

I voted .308 as I've taken more bears with it than anything else. However, my favorite has got to be the .338 Federal. More punch, bigger holes, and more bleeding. The only downside of .338 Federal is its obscurity, but its not down in "I gotta reload it" levels yet. Good thing too, because...

338-06, I think this is the one...

Never been a fan of long actions, so when they came out with .338 Federal, I jumped on it. I absolutely love this cartridge for black bear. I would expect that .338-06 would be even better.

    savage 110 ultralite

I just bought my daughter a Lightweight Storm in .308. If I remember the stats correctly, its only about 11 oz heavier than the Ultralight but costs $700 less. It seemed like a much better value to me.

.308 vs Black Bear Skull (nope, I don't reccomend this)

Glad it worked out for you. I never trust my own marksmanship to attempt a head shot, though my shots tend to be more than accurate enough, I always fear the one time it isn't. What kind of bullet did you use? Nice to see that you're using hearing protection. Too many hunters don't. Last...
