    Hardcore coyotes

For those of you who are new to coyote hunting/behaviors. They will spend the vast majority of their time on the down-wind side of hills or in/adjacent to ground cover. Utilizing the up-wind mainly. For traveling from one down wind area to the next. They spend very little time on the up-wind...

    Hardcore coyotes

I hunt North central plains/or foothills. One Winter day it was bitter cold near -30 wind chill. I seen a pair of coyotes a tad over 1/2 mile out with my binocs. So in I snuck, slinking my way near for a prone shot amongst the foot hills. My last hill top. I stopped & went prone. The nearest of...

    Glad I had a tourniquet

Spot on advice. In a pinch. A shoe string/boot lace. Or a long thin torn swath from a shirt. All will work as a tourniquet. Without anything, firm direct pressure over the cut artery or vein is/can be a life saver.

    Breakfast time

Female would come back early from a morning hunt. Then stand at the entrance hole, look down that hole. Then call out her kits. They poured out & commenced to nursing.

    Sleeper

You, me, us can look at any wild canine sleeping/curled up reasting & be 99.9% certain. We know which direction the wind was blowing over that canine. Reason being 99.9% of time time. They bed down with the wind at their backside. That behavior, is a gimme.

    Near death

Circa Fall; 1983. I was a career city firefighter. I helped fight a business fire one fall day in my home town. Capt's truck responded to the store front on main st. Lt & I responded around back in an ally. We seen heavy black smoke wafting up around a below ground stair well wooden door. We...

How I would give 1st aid to myself. If I had an open chest wound in the field.

Winter of 89 while working off of a ladder. Assisting fighting a 2.5 story house fire. I was on a ladder over the front steps of the house. I fell 12' to the concrete below. Slamming flat on my back onto the cement sidewalk. A mili-second before impact. My lumbar area which ended up being at an...

How I would give 1st aid to myself. If I had an open chest wound in the field.

Well in my attempt to stop this thread from going awry(See; personal insults). Is the reasoning behind my replies. I've seen enough badness happen to people during my 28yrs of fire/ems. Have I seen it all, H#ll no. But I'm not some internet wannabe arm chair quarterback doctor either. My field...

How I would give 1st aid to myself. If I had an open chest wound in the field.

Pneumothorax/tension pneumothroax. Bigjay73, I'm a tough ole boy. I've experienced my own trauma & sucked it up. During my medic years I've seen quite a few people with severe trauma(including many women). Speaking of women from what I have witnessed. They are the tougher of the sexes by far. I...

How I would give 1st aid to myself. If I had an open chest wound in the field.

Open chest wound; How I would treat myself. In Emergency Services, the phrase "Golden Hour". Refers to the likely hood of survival in a serious trauma incident. Getting that victim to advanced emergency care/treatment within that 1st hour. There are many factors that play into that 1st hour as...

    Broken ribs

Your lucky none of your broken ribs didn't lacerate an artery. I never had a broken rib. However, I've taken some stout hits elsewhere. Some were during fist fights. Some were non-fight related trauma. Back when I was a young buck.

    Broken ribs

I will also add. Behind each rib, lies an artery, vein & nerve. IF, any of those broken ribs lacerate that artery. It is bad news. As that artery continues to bleed & fill up the space(pleural space). Between the inner chest wall & lung. That lung will eventually be compressed & or collapse...

    Broken ribs

Speaking of medical tape. I'm not sure what is on the market now days? As it's been quite a few yrs now since I was a medic. I suggest using tape that will adhere well on sweaty/blood covered skin. Tape we used back then. IF... the skin surface was wet/bloody/sweaty.... That tape did not stick...

    Broken ribs

Closed chest wound; I have experienced that while being a medic. Multiple adjacent rib fractures are called a "Flail Chest". Flail chest injury is when a person has multiple broken (adjacent ribs). One can palpate/feel the area & or sometime see the outer chest wall abnormality. Especially noted...

    My quest

My quest for the ever elusive Mountain Lion. Since my 1st sighting in Winter of 2006. I've hunted hard every year. To find a fresh track. The two snow tracks are from the same lion. Track print is roughly 4.5" wide. The other tracks are from smaller lions. I found all of these tracks during one...
