Thanks for sharing the pictures. I live in NC and think it is awesome that they have brought Elk back to the East. I'll be going to the Elkfest in Maggie Valley in Sept and will be camping near the original release site and will try to take some pics of Elk if I see any and post them. I'm not...
I just checked this AM after someone left me a message yesterday evening that there were only 151 Utah General season "Any Bull" tags left. Now there are none. They have sold out already!
I've heard the same thing. Many where I hunt say they go onto the Reservation. I can't verify that but it's certainly possible. I still see elk in there though after the first weekend so I'm pretty sure not all Elk leave quickly. I wonder if some of the migration is gradual and some of the...
i just heard they sold 12000 of the 15000 available tags the 1st 4 days so if you plan on a Utah hunt Any bull hunt if the tags aren't already sold out they very soon will be.
Hi Ed,
I'm an eastern hunter too, NC to be exact. I hunted Utah last year though. What most have told you already is correct. Utah has OTC tags you can purchase as you already know. You have 2 options being a non resident. The Any bull tag or any spike tag. They both offer some advantages...
Alpha,
Ridge sounds like he knows what he's talking about. I don't know how long you can afford to hunt but if not the whole season I would definitely plan on hunting the last week of the season.
Thought I would add that the "any bull' tag is OTC (or online) and is limited to 15000 first come, first served and go on sale July 16th. I feel that if you want a bull elk your odds may be best on the north slope, especially for a large bull, but if you don't mind taking any elk then the South...
Moon lake area definitely holds Elk. It's tough getting up in there but worth the trip. Always best of course if it's uphill going in so it will be downhill coming out with an Elk. I hunted the south slope last year. Saw a lot of hunters but you won't see a lot if you go in a mile or better...
Phil,
I'm a Vet too, but an older one. I did a bow hunt in the Lolo (unit 10 and 12) in 2017. I would not recommend unit 10 for sure based on my expeirence as I never saw an Elk though I did hear one bugle a couple times toward the end of my hunt. There is a state wildlife area near the...
Elkocd,
I have hunted several states as well. I think our expeirence is often more unit based than state based. If one happens to be in a unit at the right time they may get a different perspective of that state than someone else hunting a different unit at the wrong time. For example last...
Sorry to hear of your heart attack.
Should be an awesome rifle. 6.5 X 300 is the fastest 6.5 round out there that I know of. Looks like it would be light enough to to carry anywhere. Best of luck selling.
Looking for a Elk hunting partner for this year and maybe in the future. This year I'm hunting in Utah during the Anybull season (Oct6-18).
I'm willing to work hard to make the hunt a success and if we plan a hunt together I'm not one to back out. I am set up to hunt from the truck or pack in...
Hi Ladykiller.
I'm from the midwest also but moved south. I kinda envey you having moved west where there are Elk. I'm told by a friend who moved to Washington State that there are 2 kinds of Elk in Washington. My friend is in the NW part of the state which is basically a rainforest so is...
Looks real nice and a great price for a like new Magnum rifle. For the money and condition of this rifle I'm really suprised it hasn't sold already. I have a 300 WM already or I would buy.
Looks Like a fine rifle. I have a 300 Win mag and really like it but had I to do it over I would take the WSM over the win mag for the shorter bolt stroke and virtually the same Ballistics.
Thanks, did what you said and it worked perfect! It was set for deer so I set it for Elk so now I'm good on that issue. I was impressed with how many hunt options there were in the sublayer. Yea, I have the one of the antlerless tags as well as the bull so I may half to pen in the boundaries...
