Just wondering which scenario drives everyone's decisions. When do you all want to be in the woods? Early and before the season starts and the elk get pressured or during the heat of the rut when they are screaming everywhere?

I have the fear if I get to butcher and I am worried if I will really be able to sleep well. Its already providing a good dose of humility to me.
Thanks everybody for the thoughts. Very helpful.
I can type LOL when I really LOL'ed, right?
Thanks for tips, all! I like the idea of spraying some bear spray around the carcass or hanging meat. Additional security while away.
I am preparing for my first elk hunt in areas that are known for the grizz. I am going solo. I have confidence in staying grizz-free in camp and hiking/scouting around, but I keep getting hung up on the idea of quartering/butchering an elk (if I am lucky enough) without a watch out.
My plan...
I would think bears concentrated into small areas would be a good thing. How does more green grass help if that will just spread the bears out? Maybe I am not thinking about it right, but when I used to fish tournaments for bass, finding a hump or channel in a flat barren stretch concentrated...
Thanks for all the replies, everybody. All very helpful. No matter what time I decide to go, it sounds like snowpack and green-up is important and I can try to find one area better than others during that timeframe by using the USDA website.
Just a quick question about what I am looking at...
Thanks for the thoughts, guys. Appreciate your time.
Is there a website that tracks snow pack and green-up conditions or is that something where you just have to know how much snow there was on average and adjust accordingly to the snowpack for that year?
My wife told me she has a need to be in Colorado from May 26th through June 1st. She is trying to lure me into combining my desire for a Montana spring bear hunt to the same timeframe instead of earlier.
I have never been on a bear hunt, but a few questions came to mind as I consider her...
I saw someone post on a thread here a while back about an elk unit in Wyoming. They mentioned (just throwing out numbers), that in that units 2000 square miles, only 750 square miles were deemed usable habitat in that unit.
Anybody know where I can find that data. I have looked at a few of...
I was looking at the unit next to the one I think they were in. Little more space and still has the same Type 1 rifle start date as the unit I think they hunted in. With that, does it change your opinion any? I am betting no, but thought I would ask.
The wilderness area has this allure...
You can see resident draw odds on GoHunt. Just switch from non-resident to resident and it should show you Unit 48 has 100% odds for 1st choice resident applicants. Its also on Wyoming Game & Fish website.
