    Botswana Elephant Hunting

Let me give you some alternative math: My son draws the 400:1 odds New Mexico Non-Resident Oryx tag. 100s of hours of time plotting the odds. Tied up $20,000 in tag applicaiton fees trying to draw anything. Won the tag, I'm out $1700 for the tag. We stay at a godforsaken, filthy hotel for...

    Botswana Elephant Hunting

Reading a LOT of assumptions here on cost of hunts. Africa is "cheap" by most standards. You know what isn't cheap? A non-resident elk hunt. Time value of drawing tags and doing hunt research for US drawings every year. Logistical expenses of getting to public land for non-residents. Going to...

WTS: The last? - Abercrombie & Fitch .270 Mauser - Mint

An Abercrombie & Fitch Mauser action rifle in .270 Winchester. The gun is in its Abercrombie & Fitch case and it includes the original purchase invoice and paper/cardboard original shipping box as well. The rifle has a high luster finish, is engraved "Abercrombie & Fitch, Beverly Hills, CA"...

“That would be the end of our industry”

Listened to a podcast with Rinella and QDMA this week that mentioned baiting. I like the QDMA policy on the matter: They won't seek to approve new baiting laws. They do not recommend ending old baiting laws. The reasons: The ethics of the region have been defined. That is how that culture...

Poll: Would you shoot a doe with a fawn?

I hate my name being recorded "yes/no" to a loaded question, so I wouldn't participate. But here with nuance, my answer: Yes, if there is utility in having the meat and it's legal, provided that the fawn is of sufficient age and at a point where it will thrive without the presence of the doe...

Need genius advice from an Archery Physics Geek

Friends, My son is an avid hunter and has been for several years. He's presently 8.5. He practices his archery regularly with a Hoyt bow presently set at 22" draw, 30lb draw weight. Goals are important to anyone, especially children. He wants to take turkey and deer with his bow, rather than...

    Low recoil rounds???

Yes and no. Yes, there is a larger variety of ammo for the 7-08 available via mailorder. No, I don't believe there is "better" ammo available for the 7mm-08 via factory loads. Permit me to explain my opinion: The ammo that truly makes a 7mm-08 or a 7x57 truly work its magic is the really heavy...

    Low recoil rounds???

Specific to his initial question with his 30-06, Hornady Custom-Lite ammo in 30-06 is quite good and will reduce recoil by more than 30%. My kids use this ammo in 243 for hunting inside of 200 yards.

    Forgotten Calibers

Since these calibers are usually built for VERY fine or best rifles, Vintage is the word.

    Forgotten Calibers

I think the word you're looking for is "vintage cartridges". Some were quite good and are still used today, although in high-end rifles and typically for European or African work. Some examples: 9.3x72r 8x57jr 350 Griffin & Howe 280 Ross anything Collath 318 Westley Richards 240, 275 and 300...

    Low recoil rounds???

JR2, I sympathize with your plight. No one hates recoil more than I do which is embarrassing as I’m a giant. I detest the recoil of a 30-06 or 300 winmag off a bench rest, yet I shoot 375s, 416s, 458s, 500 nitros with no issues. How? Shoot off sticks and you won’t take all the recoil in your...

    Bore sighters

A really good rest/vise and the eyeball method has proved to be superior to any of the tech methods in my recent experiences. The last two rifles I did the old way, carefully, were hunt ready as-is. I had to adjust 4 clicks on elevation at the range was all.

    Hunting without high-priced toys

The comparisons of the original post actual bring out a hidden detail. That old “junk” rifle, a Springfield sporter, a mauser, a pre-64 Winchester, an Enfield sporter....they are 1000% better than the new stuff. That “lousy” 4x weaver from the late 1960s or that old Redfield is better than...

    Forgotten Calibers

Some thoughts for this thread, apologies if the ideas offend some, but that's not my intention. Do you believe reliability of a controlled round feed / mauser action is supreme? (then the forgotten calibers aren't forgotten, they are commonplace) Do you shoot inside of 350-400 yards? (then the...

    Forgotten Calibers

While not at all forgotten calibers in fine rifles, or with New Englanders, Europeans, or safari hunters, these calibers get no discussion on this forum: 7x57 6.5x55 7x64 9.3x62 6.5x54 303 British 35 Whelen 300 H&H 257 Roberts 318 Westley Richards 404 Jefferey On this forum, accuracy and...

Best Fresh Tracks scene ever...according to my kids

My kids have made it clear that whenever we pack our gear moving forward I'm to bring a ziplock of Montreal Steak seasoning on every hunt...and a lighter. :) (yes, they are being serious)

Best Fresh Tracks scene ever...according to my kids

Randy hooked my kids with one scene for non-trophy elk awhile ago. They started trimming up the animal next to a fire when they got the idea to cook some elk on a hot rock. According to some fanatical young outdoors people in my straw poll, that was the coolest thing Randy has ever done on any...

My son draws a N.M. oryx tag...now what?

Thanks folks. I'm not getting a whole lot of intel from the game wardens I called (said they saw 1 oryx off-range in past two years) and I'm hearing from outfitters that its a private land thing...I very expensive, outfitted, private land thing. Obviously, I'm skeptical and would like to...

My son draws a N.M. oryx tag...now what?

My 8.5 year old is a hunting fanatic and this year asked me to add oryx to his pronghorn and mulie application...he draws the July off-range tag. He watches Randy’s show and he asked me to post here looking for advice. I think I want to be west of WSM on the North, but I’m not sure. Thanks...
