Given the beauty surrounding us, I've taken to carrying a camera on most of my walks. I walk the hunting dog 3 - 6 miles almost every day. He's not much help when it comes to steadying the camera, that's for sure! :)
But we find things of beauty, every walk. I think it's interesting how much...
I know a fellow who selected 180 gr bullets for antelope, using his 300 mag... For less velocity, and less meat damage. It worked just fine.
I've used both my 25-06 and my 30-06 rifles. There's less meat damage with the slower 30-06/165 gr load than with the 25-06, from what I've seen.

Your nice 270 Wby is just fine for hunting.
It's okay for hunting rifles to get a ding now and again. They're hunting rifles. Stick with what you've got, and hunt. :)
If you don't need the long-range, flat trajectory of the Weatherby cartridges, consider something a bit more mellow, and...
It's about all I can do. Pretty sure I'll never draw the tag. So, I watch 'em often and take a few photos too.
That's good enough. But... I'll keep applying for the tag, for a few more years.

I hunt mule deer & pronghorn with the .270's little brother, the 25-06, and a 6x Leupold. Works great. I've made one-shot kills at over 400 yards, and popped bucks at much shorter ranges as well.
Have a near identical Rem 700 in 30-06, with... you guessed it, a 6x Leupold. :)
Simple. Sturdy...
Saw a one-shot kill on a grizzly.
140 gr Barnes and a 7mm Rem Mag. Range was about 80 yards. That bullet did a lot of damage and dropped the grizz quickly. I think it would be just fine on elk.

I've owned the 300 Win Mag, the 300 WSM, and the 30-06.
All are great cartridges. My preference is the 30-06 as it works just peachy and is easier on the shooter. None are a bad choice. I did sell a sporter-weight 300 Rem Ultra Mag, 'cause it was beating me up a bit much and I didn't want to...
Photo taken from a friend's driveway:
I think that's enough of a bull for most of us. :) I was sitting in my Jeep, motor & heater running, parked on his driveway. Would have been just as easy to be sitting there, next to my Jeep with the 30-06 in hand, instead of the camera. There are some...
Not all elk hunting is the same. Some is rough-tough superman type hunting in the high mountains. Other times, a fellow can lean right out the window and pop one. All sorts of different situations. My elk have taken some work. I know others that came real easy. There are outfitters who can set a...
My dog and I took the camera for a little trip to find our sheep friends earlier today, before the big football game:
Dog wants to play. Sheep are not buying it. :)
I don't know.
The hide squared a bit over 8', and the skull missed Boone & Crockett by about an inch. I've been told that it's an exceptional bear for the Brooks Range, a true interior grizzly.
I remain impressed by the animal, and very grateful for the opportunity to hunt him.
