    New Guy from MN

Hey Droptine, how did your hunt go? I drew the Bannock archery tag for ‘23. What were elk numbers like? Were There lots of hunters running around?

    NM Unit 16 Roads

That was my initial plan as well, but when we got there we decided to cruise the unit (mostly 16A) beings how the main objective was an elk scouting mission. There is trail access into 16B from trailheads all over the southern portion of 16A, onX can help you with that. If you are persistent you...

    NM Unit 16 Roads

Deer densities in this set of units is low as I’m sure this isn’t the only time you will hear that. The main roads, when I was there in January of ‘18, were in great shape. From the research I have done the weather is typically mild (cold in the am and pm, but midday will warm up into...

    Garmin inreach HuntView questions

I used the inReach mini on my recent elk hunt in the Gila. I’m not sure what the hunt view app is but the Earthmate app that you have to download to operate and text through your phone for the mini is not a great map to follow. Like everyone else is stating on this thread make your onX work even...

    Shout out to Big Agnes

Stand up company with great products. I have the Copper Spur UL2, best performing tent I have ever bought and will go back to BA for the next one too. The best part is they are a Colorado based company love shopping locally.

    E-plus review

I thought that same thing when I heard that about the antelope tags. How could the G&F expect anything else other than a possible slaughter? I am not sure if I understand the motivation or reasoning for that change? Sorry to hear about the EPlus fiasco you and others are going through.

    Co. archery elk opinions

I can’t speak to 66 specifically as I’ve never hunted it, but with a unit that big and as much wilderness as there is I’d venture to say that if you put enough miles into elk country you’d strike up bulls no matter what part of the season you hunt.

    Co. archery elk opinions

As a generalization bulls are typically not as active before muzzy, however they are less pressured and educated to hunting pressure for the year. After the 9 day muzzy season they tend to be more weary about the hunting pressure but as the days and nights get cooler they seem to be more active...

    July 4th weekend scouting

It’s always worth it if you put the right attitude towards it. Scouting trips like this don’t just end up as a trip to see animals, in fact that is a rare cherry on top most of the time. They tend to be a confidence builders for your fall excursion. Boosting your knowledge base of country you...

    Cellular trail cameras

I have had this thought myself though it might be tough to find good elk country not on private land with cell service. I have a couple spots where I can get a bar or two of 3G, but those spots always seem to be on some exposed point not a great spot to hang a camera. Good luck sounds like a fun...

5-Year Big Game Season Structure alternatives

Don't look too deep into what I said because I meant exactly what I said I hope all who draw tags are grateful for the opportunity and understand how fortunate they are. Look at other countries that don't have our public lands and tag availability and ease of access to the outdoors. I think your...

    Hunting Burns?

I just spent a couple days in an area that gets prescribed burns regularly (kudos to the NM forest service for being proactive about this). They burned an area 2 weeks ago that I kicked elk out of yesterday and the grass coming up in the black charred spots was already 4-5” long. With the right...

    Archery OTC Dilemma

Hunting solo can sometimes put me into an almost metatative state of mind. I tune in to the country so much more clearly and I think I enjoy it more. The only thing you really have to watch out for is the distance you travel from a road or the truck. There are a few measures you can take to...

5-Year Big Game Season Structure alternatives

Unlike most residents I am alright with tag price increases when it occasionally comes down to that. I understand that it takes money to run an operation such as the CPW does. I say unlike most residents because a lot of the people I work/associate with always threaten that they are going to get...

5-Year Big Game Season Structure alternatives

I promise you this is a fact that every self aware resident considers. I grew up in the small town of Craig where the influx of hunters and revenue from those hunters is a big driver of the economy. My earlier questions/comments are not of the bashing kind towards non residents. One of my first...

5-Year Big Game Season Structure alternatives

I wonder what the repercussions would be if a scenario like that would play out, what would the CPW have to cut out of their budget? Beings how we license buying hunters residents and non residents alike foot most of the bill for their budget would it be small ridiculous reductions such as...

3rd or 4th Rifle for Mule Deer in CO

I second this. Fewer people in the field can increase a hunts value immensely in most cases. The only time I can recall more people being in the field a good thing is on the earlier rifle hunts for elk in the flattops where more people keep the elk up and moving out of the timber like pinballs...
