My last coues was shot with a 143g ELDX at 500yds. Quartering away, went through a rib, through the boiler room and lodged under the skin at the front of the offside shoulder. He was dead before he hit the ground. It had very good expansion, but the jacket did separate from the core.
I'm having a rifle re-barreled this fall and setup as my primary do everything hunting rifle. It's a short action R700 and it's getting chambered in 7mm SAUM. 7SAUM is very close to 280ai. It should be a great all arounder with a 175g bullet, I'm hoping I can get it going at least 2800fps with...
I have an Elk tag in one of Arizona's "condor units" this year and will be voluntarily using lead free bullets. I've been working up lead free loads for both my hunting rifles this spring.

If I was in the market for a factory .308 hunting rifle one of these would probably be my first choice. Smooth actions that are Rem700 footprint so all the aftermarket stuff is available and a 1 MOA guarantee.
I have the Ridge in 6.5cm and my buddy has a Ridge in 7RM, they are both excellent...
As an adult onset hunter I have only harvested two deer with a rifle.
Both were Coues whitetail shot at 425 yds and 500 yds respectively. (shot over the top of a tripod rest)
I guess that makes me a statistical anomaly.
Resurrecting this thread with a couple of updates.
I emailed Vortex customer service and they sent me two extra turrets free of charge. I now have two for each scope which is perfect because I have two loads for each of my hunting rifles
I worked out a good label format and printed it from...
I currently have a 270wsm and a 300wsm, often thought about "splitting the difference" with a 7mm.
If I was going to do it I would seriously consider going with the 7mm-300wsm wildcat. That way you can use the more readily available 270wsm or 300wsm brass and just neck it up or down.
Most...
Lately I've been developing two loads for each of my hunting rifles.
1. Light for caliber lead-free
2. Heavy for caliber, high BC, semi frangible
I feel like that give me a lot of good options, including hunting in lead-free areas.
I just acquired an older Howa 1500 chambered in 300 win mag. I'm thinking of re-barreling it but I'd like to do a non-magnum cartridge. Does anyone know if the bolt face can be changed or if replacement bolts are available?
I'd also recommend you take a look at Bergara. They're building some really nice rifles that are as accurate as anything out there. Also they are a Rem700 footprint so lots of available aftermarket stocks, triggers etc.
I have the B14 Ridge in 6.5cm and the thing shoots wonderful.
If you're on...
The whole concept around comparing cartridges is interesting (and entertaining if you keep it all in perspective). You basically have one case shooting three different caliber bullets; 308win, 7mm08 & 260rem (practically the same as 6.5cm). Since you have the same powder stack and configuration...
Your calc looks like it is for sea level. Although elk live at sea level (I've seen them) I'd say it's unlikely this one was taken at sea level. If you assume 7500' then the same calculation comes out to 1200 ft-lbs which is much more reasonable...although still too close to the edge for my taste.
As another data point my daughter is 5'3" 115 lbs and she shoots my 6.5 CM (9.25lbs) all day long and asks for more. She also has no qualms about pickup up my braked 300wsm (9.5lbs) and ringing steel with it either. The biggest issue she has is LOP, she needs about 12.5" and is going to get her...
