A little more info as far as transporter:
There are two main caribou transporters in Kotzebue. We went with Arctic Air which has changed ownership to Unguided Alaska. This is the first year under new ownership. I know they have had some struggles with scheduling and whatnot so I’m sure there...
They are working to close it to non residents but right now there’s one main area they closed which used to be the favorite spot. So the transporters have moved out of the closed area. I think the future is pretty dicey with caribou hunting up there.
I did end up splitting it but the transporter made that super easy. We also signed up for Alaska air cargo and it was about $250 to ship two caribou. They even have an antler shipping service as well.
BTW, as luck would have it, I’m nearly 100% sure that’s the bull from day 1 picture. Shot about 1-1.5 miles from where we saw him two days prior. I never would have believed we’d get back on that caribou.
Ok at the airport again so I’ll wrap this up.
When I crawled up over the small gravel pile I pretty much had a mental breakdown. All I saw was a sea of antlers. There was about 30 caribou tightly packed together in a small depression. Right in front of me was a massive bull, tines going...
Ok took a break to go throw spinners off the break wall and drop our meat off at Alaska air cargo. Less than 1/2 the cost of doing it as checked bags. Very slick. Ok so I think we left off where I was up to bat. That afternoon proved to be very uneventful and the weather continued to...
Just hammered a burger at the Bison restaurant here in Katzebue. Feeling like a real human with some good food.
Anyways, walking up on our first caribou was awesome. We couldn’t believe it happened on hunt day 1. It was a beautiful bull with a small double shovel and a lot of character...
So where did I leave off here. The rest of the day was filled with glassing and absolutely falling apart inside wanting to chase what we saw. After dinner I spotted a lone animal and threw the spotter on it. I just about fell out of my chair. It was an absolute stud of a bull. I ran across...
After some glassing to get us fired up, we went on a water mission. When we got to the bottom, we had some caribou come check us out. They really are very curious. After grabbing water. We went on a large knob on the other side of the creek. It was several hundred feet high and about 1/2...
Hi guys and gals,
I’m currently working my way home from my first caribou trip. I figured some people might appreciate some of the info so here you go.
Day 1 we flew to anchorage and onto Kotzebue. Travel was easy and we packed two carry on and two checked bags each, our packs in a duffle...
Lol that’s a pretty aggressive squirrel setup 😂
I dug through my pictures to find one from my last pistol deer hunt. One thing I learned was to bring ear protection!
Same I think, unguided Ak. Hopefully we get to go. I turned in two tags and ate $$$ to get up there. I’ll be so sad if I threw those tags away for nothing. If we make it, I’ll definitely do a write up and be happy to talk with you about it.
